This is Maggie 🐾

A young Whippet puppy we worked with.

Her owners originally attended a puppy preschool through another company, but felt like they still needed more guidance once they got home and started dealing with real day-to-day life.

That’s actually really common.

Puppy classes are a great starting point, but a lot of dogs still need more individual help to build structure, confidence, and clear direction in all areas.

With Maggie, it’s been about slowing things down, giving her owners practical tools, and helping them understand what she actually needs at this stage.

She’s coming along well, and things are starting to click for her at home.

Raising a “stress-free” puppy sounds nice… but I see where that leads all the time.

Puppies scared of stairs, dogs that lose it over other dogs, people, bikes, cars, trucks…
And the go-to response?
“He’s scared of it, so we just avoid it.”

That’s exactly why it doesn’t get better.
Avoiding something doesn’t fix it — it just teaches the dog they were right to be worried in the first place.
Confidence isn’t just there… it’s built.

I’m not saying go throw your puppy in the deep end.
But you do need to start exposing them to things they’re unsure about, in a way they can actually handle.

Start small. Stay in control. Build it up.

That could be:
Watching traffic from a distance
Letting bikes pass at a comfortable gap
Taking stairs one step at a time
Calm, controlled interactions with people and dogs
That’s how you end up with a dog that can handle real life.

Avoidance creates fragile dogs.
Exposure builds confident ones. 🐾

Reef snagged 🥈 at the QLD Championships a few weeks back 👏

Worked his heart out in the heat and really outdid himself. Gained a whole new appreciation for this boy 🐕🔥

“Spaces hold energy…
Play with your dog outside, inside is for switching off and relaxing.”

I get a lot of people saying,
“my dog doesn’t settle down,” or
“my dog keeps bringing me the toy when I’m trying to relax.” 🎾😅

This happens because spaces hold energy. ✨

Set the boundary that play happens outside, not inside. 🌳🏡
Your dog will learn that indoors is for switching off, not winding up. 😌🐾

Just like we have a workplace to work 💼, a gym to train 🏋🏽‍♂️, and a bedroom to sleep 🛏️ —
we don’t exercise at work or in bed,
we don’t work at the gym,
and we don’t sleep at work. 😴

Teach your dog the same kind of structure — it creates balance and calm. 🐕⚖️

🐾Max🐶

He started off a little unsure, but week by week he’s coming out of his shell. Such a clever little Cocker Spaniel — it’s been a real joy watching his confidence grow. 💛

“Dogs will always avoid the greater pressure in a situation with multiple stressors.”

If they choose one behaviour, it doesn’t mean the other issue is “fixed”, it’s just the lesser pressure in that moment. The underlying discomfort is still there.

Instead of seeing it as stubbornness or spite, let’s reframe: help the dog feel more comfortable with what they’re struggling with instead of just suppressing the behaviour.

🐾 Big day at the Brisbane Ekka! 🐾

So proud of Dixie taking out 1st place in the Sheep Dog Competition! 🏆🐑

Can’t forget to mention Reef for a solid effort, coming away with a 7th place finish against some tough competition and tough sheep.

Both dogs worked their hardest and made me proud. ❤️ Thanks to and for the prizes!

“Dogs don’t act out of spite.
They are simply showing behaviours they have learnt will improve their situation or relieve pressure whether physical or emotional”

🐾 Dogs don’t act out of spite.

They repeat behaviours that have previously worked for them to get what they want or to avoid what they don’t.

That’s not attitude, that’s learning.

Through operant conditioning, we can change those patterns by showing them better options or different outcomes that still work for them.

🐾 Meet Willow! 🐾

Willow is a little French Bulldog puppy who recently attended one of our Puppy Preschool classes.

Her owners were dedicated to giving her the best start in life and came to us hoping to build strong foundations early — and Willow absolutely thrived! 🌟

Swipe across ——>> to see her doing her best wiggly dance, trying to make friends with one of our other pups 💃🐶

We love seeing confident, playful puppies learning how to interact in a safe, structured environment — and Willow nailed it!

“First, build value in your motivator. If it lacks value, so will your dog’s focus, work ethic, drive and their ability to handle pressure in training.“

When we talk about motivators, we’re not just talking about food.
Motivation can come from toys, tug, different styles of play, herding livestock, water, etc. 🦴🎾🌊

Every dog is different — it’s our job to find what makes them tick. 🐕‍🦺💡

When starting your training journey, if what you’re offering doesn’t hold enough value…
your dog will become disengaged and start choosing other options — like other dogs, people, or whatever distractions are in the environment. 🐕👀

🧠 Think of motivators like currency.
If your reward is worth 10 cents, and the distraction is worth $100... your dog will take the better deal every time. 💸🐾

👉 This is only the start of training.

We use high-value motivators to build engagement and teach new behaviours.
With consistent training, your dog begins to learn those behaviours.
Over time, your dog will have mastered new skills, and won’t need a constant motivator to perform what become everyday, easy tasks. 🎯✅

It all starts with motivation.
