Blue bottle alert!
In recent days, we have observed an increasing number of canine presentations with blue bottle stings subsequent to visiting beaches at Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.
It is unusual for these creatures to wash up on our shores, particularly in the numbers currently being experienced.
Consider keeping your dog on a lead to avoid contact. If your dog is not a swimmer, walking them while wearing dog booties may be beneficial; however, this may be impractical if your dog frequently enters and exits the water.
If your dog sustains a sting, it is essential to promptly return them to saltwater (not freshwater) for at least 30 seconds to a minute to rinse the affected area.
DO NOT use vinegar, as this can exacerbate venom release. Vinegar treatment is recommended for tropical jellyfish, not blue bottles.
Warm water or ice may alleviate pain, but if it persists beyond 20 minutes, seek veterinary attention. These stings can be extremely painful and distressing.
