A nice simple look at the solar view of a hoof!
Here are the parts of the hoof from the solar view (underside).
Heel Bulb
The heel bulbs are found at the back of the hoof. They should appear large and symmetrical on both sides, aiding the hoof in absorbing concussion.
Heel Buttress
Along with the bars, the heel buttress (one laterally, one medially) helps to support the hoof and bear weight. The heel buttress should be wide and dense.
Bar
Along with the heel buttress, the bars (one laterally, one medially) helps to support the hoof and bear weight.
Seat of Corn
The seat of corn (one laterally, one medially) is the name for the area between the bars and hoof wall.
Frog
The frog is the triangular shaped structure that is vital to hoof health. The frog helps to provide cushion, increase circulation, traction and proprioception.
Central Sulcus
The central sulcus is the groove found at the center of the frog. This part of the hoof should be wide and shallow. A deep central sulcus is prone to disease.
Collateral Groove
The collateral groove (one laterally, one medially) is the structure that lies between the frog, bars and sole. These grooves, similar to the central sulcus should be shallow. If they are too deep, the collateral grooves will be prone to disease.
Sole
The sole makes up the majority of the hoof surface and is made of horn. Like the rest of the hoof, the sole is made of living tissue that will adapt its shape, thickness and texture to the environment.
Hoof Wall
Similar to the sole, the hoof wall is made of horn, although it is thicker and more rigid.
