It has been a very busy holiday period here at the school house.

We have been building and modifying our pens to expand and keep our birds safe.

We have had a terrible season with ravens attacking our birds and wiping out entire pens of young chicks.

The new pens all now have wire roofing to keep everyone safe.

We currently have chicks available in a variety of ages, from one week old up to 8 weeks.
Sexed and unsexed
Breeds:
Barred Plymouth Rocks
French Wheaten Marans
Australorp
Gold Spangled Hamburgs
And possibly some other odd ones here or there.

Also have a couple of Buff Sussex pullets that will grow up to be beautiful big ladies that lay a lot of eggs.

We have hens available as well, of varied ages.
Columbian Blacktails x4
Rhode Island Red x1
Barred Plymouth Rock x1
Silver Laced Wyandotte x1
Light Sussex x5
Barnevelder x1

Stay tuned for what breeds will be available this spring.

The hens are laying well and we have plenty of fertile eggs here at the school house. And chicks hatching regularly. So please don’t hesitate to send a message and have a chat.

Our gorgeous Barred Plymouth Rocks were the first chickens to arrive here and are a family favourite. They are calm, friendly, great foragers and the best layers we have.
Always the first to start laying after winter and last to stop each winter.

Our rooster, Russell Crow is a handsome gentlemen and takes very good care of his ladies.

Our two-year-old son never misses his afternoon chores of feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs. His favourite is when Russell and his girls are around so they will eat out of his hand.

If anyone is interested in some gorgeous birds that are great layers and pets, just message.

Welcome to School House Heritage Hens.

We are a young family living in an old country school house in the Northwest of Tasmania. We breed and raise a variety of pure bred heritage chickens. We have a love for poultry, including breeding, genetics and showing. We believe in getting our children involved in all areas of our small homestead and it’s amazing to see them grow and learn.

Both my partner and I work in education and love to give back to the local schools. I currently assist with a poultry program at the local high school where I work and intend to expand to other schools in the area. This program give the students responsibilities and teaches them animal husbandry and genetics. Profits go back to the school and spare eggs are gifted to the canteen and cooking departments.

Here at School House Heritage Hens we offer fertile eggs, chicks, pullets and breeding groups in a variety of breeds.

All breeds are happy healthy and free range. All breeds are kept by myself and in a conjunction with the local high school where I work.
