SUMMER PRUNING WORKSHOP
We still have not been able to get our annual pruning workshop for this time of the year organised. I noticed that other people have run them this year already so I am wondering how much interest there is in our putting one on at Elizabeth with Joe and Andrew in coming weeks. Please let us know if you are interested and if you would prefer weekdays, Saturday or Sunday. Thank you!
We also have cooking and food preparation workshops planned but our chef had a accident and is still recovering so it might be a while before that happens.

CIRCLE OF FIGS
We are having a big plant sale now including hundreds of well grown fig trees at ridiculous prices. Figs seem to fall into two categories - passionately adored and equally strongly disdained - no middle ground! For those of us fig fanciers, we cannot understand why anyone would not give a fig tree or two pride of place in our fruit garden so I had a think about it.
Firstly, we have all seen enormous old fig trees that take up a whole back garden and are up to 100 years old and no one loves figs so much that you want them exclusively. Truth – it is easy to keep it to an ideal size of two to three metres by pruning hard every winter (knee to ankle high)which will give you heavy harvests. Joe planted these 21 figs in two circles in a patch 6 x 6 metres and look how neatly they grow. This was done about ten years ago and it’s still contained and easy to manage. You can buy 21 figs at a super special price if you would like this in your garden.
Other reasons people tend to shy away is that they have never tasted a fresh fig off the tree and, believe me, dried, preserved or jammed figs are not a patch on the plain fresh fig. There are literally thousands of varieties of skin, flesh, colour and texture and we have over 400 varieties. These are for sale at the crazy price of $16 each for a tree around one metre high, many with fruit hanging on them – see pic on page photo. You will usually pay $35 to $70 for these.
They are also super easy to grow as they are native to the Middle East which has a hot dry climate like we have here and will last through long periods of no rain. The other thing about figs is that they are highly perishable so by the time you get them in the shops, they are well past their best as they should be eaten as soon as possible after picking(like all fruit). It’s fig season now so if this has you salivating, find someone with fig tree and taste what a real fig is like: $16 for a hit of pure bliss every autumn. And they will hang for a few weeks too! https://joes-connected-garden.square.site

We were all so thrilled to get this grant which enabled us to buy a proper oven for the function room at Andrew's Urban Farm . We are still discussing the program we will be offering this year and are very interested to get feedback to see what people want. Vegan, meal planning, preserving, dehydrating, pickling, cooking on a budget or anything else covering the topic of preparing freshly picked food for maximum taste, nutritional benefit, economy and just plain enjoyment! Thanks so much for choosing us! We have been around a long time, thanks to the support we get from people like you. Tell us what you want!

We are pleased to share that last year's 2025 Microgrant enabled the collective of residents at Joe's Connected Garden and Andrew's Urban Farm to purchase an oven to assist with expanding their gardening mission to providing cooking lessons on how to prepare all the lovely food people are learning to grow.

"It's all about improving the physical and mental health of our client base by upskilling in a friendly, welcoming, inclusive environment that enables our visitors to explore new, healthier ways of living."

Check out their wonderful work through their pages.
