If Keller was in charge, I’d still be outside throwing that ring

This afternoon’s fun: fetch with her Leashables ring, a sit or drop before the next throw, and a cameo from Charlie inspecting the camera with his nose

Play is a great opportunity to practise listening and taking a moment before the fun continues.

We also have a clear finish. For Keller, who is deaf, my crossed arms signal “all done”. We finish on a high, with me calling the end of the game… because Keller’s idea of “one more throw” is another three hours!

Have fun, keep it clear, and give your dog a way to know when the game is over.

Meet Tilly!

Today I caught up with Tilly and her lovely mum, Marie, to work on some reactivity and everyday manners!

Sometimes the best place to start isn’t with the big behaviours, but with the little things at home.

We worked on clear communication, setting boundaries and introducing place training to help Tilly learn to switch off and relax.

And Marie’s homework? Shake it off! 💃

We’re taking the pressure off walks and focusing on simply enjoying being out together. Find a quiet bench, roll out Tilly’s towel, bring out the snuffle mat and just relax!

Because sometimes the best training session is learning that you don’t have to do anything at all.

Your dog can listen in the backyard… but what happens when the world gets interesting?

After Dark Training Club takes your training into the real world around Maitland, helping you practise around everyday distractions with guidance along the way.

Recently, we’ve been working on the human end of the lead too—handler posture, clearer leash handling and calm movement. Small details that help you communicate more clearly with your dog.

We practise:
🐾 Loose-lead walking past distractions
🐾 Checking in and staying connected
🐾 Settling and waiting while life carries on
🐾 Building confidence together in different environments

Already working on the basics and ready to put them into practice? This could be your next step.

📩 Message Best Behaviour “AFTER DARK” with a little about your dog, and I’ll help you work out whether the club is a good fit.

Your end of the lead matters too

At After Dark Training Club, we’ve been working on handler posture, clearer leash handling and calm movement, putting those skills into practice around everyday distractions.

It’s a great next step for owners who have started the basics and want guided practice with their dog in real-world settings.

TWO SISTERS, TWO VERY DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES!

Meet Luna and Stormy, two beautiful 10-month-old Cane Corso × German Shepherd sisters who Greg and I had the pleasure of working with over the weekend.

Luna is the more independent of the two, while Stormy is a little more reserved, often looking to her sister or owner, Adam, for reassurance and guidance.

Adam reached out to Best Behaviour for support with lead pulling, reactivity and helping the girls become more manageable and confident when out and about.

With two young, powerful dogs, our first session focused on establishing the foundations of clear communication, lead handling, engagement and structure.

One of the biggest takeaways? Training two dogs doesn’t mean treating them as one.

Each dog has her own personality, challenges and learning needs. Recognising those differences is an important part of developing an effective training approach.

Moving forward, our focus will be on strengthening Adam’s communication and consistency with each girl, building Stormy’s confidence and improving both dogs’ engagement and lead manners.

A positive first session with plenty to build on! We look forward to seeing how Luna and Stormy progress as they continue putting their training into practice.

New home, new routines, same lovable Jerry

I caught up with Jerry and Ren for a follow-up session focused on helping him settle into his new home.

We worked on getting comfortable in his crate, settling on his mat and making the household boundaries clear and consistent. Just as importantly, we focused on helping everyone feel more confident together.

And yes, there’s still a place for lounge cuddles with Ren! 🥰

Moving into a new home is an adjustment for dogs and their humans. Small steps and consistent practice are what we’ll keep building on.

Lovely to see you again, Jerry!

Two vacuums going, dogs relaxing… just another day in our household

One thing I think gets overlooked in dog training is the importance of teaching our dogs that they don’t need to react to everything happening around them.

The vacuum is running, the robot vacuum is doing its thing, people are moving around… and the dogs? They’re just chilling.

And that’s exactly what I love to see!

Not every noise needs investigating. Not every movement needs following. And not everything happening around them needs their involvement.

Being able to switch off and relax while life carries on around them is such a valuable skill.

Of course, this doesn’t happen naturally for every dog. Some need time, patience and gradual exposure to become comfortable with everyday household noises and movement.

But it’s a great reminder that dog training isn’t always about teaching commands.

Sometimes, it’s about helping our dogs learn that they can simply do nothing.

Calm is a skill worth building

Is Foundations the right fit for your dog?

Your dog doesn’t need perfect manners to join….. that’s what we’re there to work on!

Our East Maitland Foundations course suits owners wanting guidance with everyday skills like loose lead walking, engagement, recall, waiting and polite greetings. It’s also a chance to refresh the basics and practise around distractions.

The key is whether your dog can cope with other dogs and people nearby, with space, and settle enough to learn. We don’t expect perfect focus, and there are no on-lead greetings.

If your dog regularly barks or lunges at dogs or people, becomes very frightened or overwhelmed, or has a bite history, please message me before enrolling. A 1:1 or reactivity consultation may be a better starting point, so we can look at what’s happening and tailor the support to your dog.

Group classes build everyday skills; individual sessions give us room to focus on your dog’s specific needs. Starting individually doesn’t automatically rule out a group later.

📍 East Maitland Scout Hall
📅 Sundays 8, 15, 22 & 29 November
⏰ 9:30–10:30 am
💵 $240 for the four-week course

Not sure where to start? Message Best Behaviour Dog Obedience with a little about your dog and what you’d like help with. We’ll talk through the most suitable next step.

Meet Rosie, a sweet, gentle girl with a busy world to figure out

Yesterday I met Rosie and her lovely family to work on making that world a little easier to navigate.

Rosie already has some lovely obedience skills, but once she steps outside the gate, unfamiliar noises and distractions can make it hard to focus on her people.

We worked on engagement through a fun game, loose lead walking, turns to help her move away from distractions, and place training to practise settling.

For Rosie, we’re starting with small, achievable steps and helping her family recognise and reward those good choices along the way.

Such a gentle soul. I’m looking forward to seeing how she and her family progress
