𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀?
Shark culls. Dingo culls. Maybe we should start government culls of humans, because no species on this planet is more destructive, greedy, or entitled than we are.
We don’t live in harmony with wildlife. We clear land, destroy habitat, and expand endlessly for profit, then act shocked when animals end up in our space. Thousands of native animals are killed across Australia every single day because of human activity. We claim to be intelligent, innovative, and advanced, yet somehow we still struggle to think beyond destruction as our default solution.
Why can’t we use that intelligence to find safer, more sustainable ways to coexist?
Sharks live in the ocean, that’s not a secret. Dingoes live on K’gari. Crocodiles inhabit northern waterways. There are signs, warnings, and public education everywhere, yet people still take risks and then blame the animals when something goes wrong. These people don’t deserve to be injured or killed, but personal responsibility has to exist alongside compassion.
Slow down on the roads at dawn and dusk. Don’t swim at night or during low-light hours. Obey warning signs. Don’t walk or swim alone in known predator zones. Swim between the flags. Stop, look around, and actually assess your environment. We live in one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth and yet we take it completely for granted.
Sharks don’t wander into our living rooms. Yet we feel entitled to take, clear, and destroy everything in their path, then punish them for existing.
Life is more than money, development, and bigger houses. Imagine if every person made just one small change. Took five extra minutes to be aware. Slowed down. Left trees standing. Respected wild spaces.
How many tragedies could be avoided?
Sometimes I wish animals had a voice, because maybe then we’d finally listen.
