🐕 Ehrlichiosis 🐕

Ticks aren’t just a nuisance - they can carry serious diseases like Ehrlichia canis, spread by the Brown Dog Tick. After entering Australia in 2020, Ehrlichiosis was deemed endemic in the northern parts of Australia, including the Pilbara region. This illness can affect your dog’s immune system and become life-threatening if left untreated.

Signs to look out for can include, but not limited to:
👉🏻lethargy
👉🏻joint swelling
👉🏻spontaneous bleeding
👉🏻lameness
👉🏻blindness

The good news? Prevention is simple.

⛑️ Regular tick protection, whether it’s tablets such as NexGard (Spectra), Bravecto, Simparico Trio, spot-ons (Adventix), collars (Seresto) or the Bravecto tick injection (which lasts for 11 months), can make all the difference.

⛑️ Check your dog routinely, especially after time outdoors, and stay consistent with preventative treatments.

⛑️ If you spend a lot of time exploring our beautiful region, I highly recommend a joint combination of a monthly preventative as well as a tick collar.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Protect your dog before a bite becomes a bigger problem. 🐾

🐾Dr Katy Davis - President of the WA Australian Veterinary Association (AVA)🐾

The AVA is the peak body representing veterinarians in Australia. They are responsible for issuing policy and position statements on animal welfare, veterinary ethics, complementary medicine, and biosecurity to guide their members and advocate for animal protection.

I recently had the honour of being elected as president of the Western Australian branch of the AVA. My goal is to improve conditions for veterinarians, clients and patients, particularly in regional and rural WA as we face some of the most challenging circumstances when it comes to accessing timely and appropriate veterinary care.

My goal in my tenure is to see the the gap between remote communities and stations accessing veterinary services bridged by the implementation of ‘vet chests’.

I also hope to boost our member numbers as our profession deserves increased awareness around the day to day challenges we often face, including financial constrains, work life balance, emotional fatigue all which has a significant impact on our mental health.

I want to raise the awareness of the importance of veterinarians from looking after your loved four legged family members, through to those in the food chain and our wildlife. By doing this I hope to see services for clients and patients improve and an overall increase in welfare for all animals great or small.

I will be travelling to Brisbane for our national conference between Saturday 16th - Friday 22nd May inclusive. During this time I will be contactable by message and I will always endeavour to help. Repeat prescriptions for current patients can still be delivered by my registered vet nurse.

Fuel Surcharge Update

With recent decreases in diesel prices, our fuel surcharge has been reduced by 50%.

We will continue to review and adjust this surcharge in line with changes in fuel costs to ensure it remains fair and reflective of current pricing.

Pilbara vets are warning residents about increasing cases of canine parvovirus after the wet season.

"Once we do get weather events that bring a lot of rain, we do see parvovirus a lot more in the community," Dampier vet Dr Katy Davis said.

"Basically, the virus is stable in our weather system and our climate, so it has the ability to be stable in the environment for so many years.

"When other dogs that have had parvovirus, get the vomiting and the diarrhoea associated with it, those excretions actually can sit and live in the environment and they're very, very stable — they can stay there for up to five to potentially seven years."

RSPCA WA's chief operating officer, Hannah Dreaver, said the best treatment for parvovirus was prevention.

"A puppy generally will need 3 vaccinations and they're usually considered fully covered 2 weeks after their last dose," Ms Dreaver said.

"An adult dog should be having an annual, or every three-year booster depending on what schedule they're on, to make sure that their antibodies stay high."

❤️Thank you❤️

Thank you so much to all my clients and patients for your understanding last week while I had to cancel and reschedule consultations to assist with the emergency response in Exmouth following TC Narelle.

Sometimes words can’t fully capture these situations, but knowing I had your support back home made it possible for me to help care for wildlife along the coast, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.

All consultations from last week have now been rescheduled to this week.

I’m still hoping to take some time off over the school holidays to enjoy some precious time with my kids, and I appreciate your continued understanding.

I’ll be opening up additional days and times on the website this afternoon.

Thank you again,
🐾 Dr Katy
