Ive been trying to decide about making this post for the last couple of weeks or if to leave it but I would like to tell this story how it truly happened.
On the afternoon of the 12th of April I responded to a job. Upon arrival a large Redbelly was seen and after trying to capture it for a little while I eventually managed to tail it as it started to go underneath a concrete slab. Nothing unusual in it doing that as it was only trying to get away. Unfortunately with where it was it couldn't stay. After some gentle persuading it came out and understandably not overly happy.
In the process of getting it in the bag it bit the bag twice and what I thought it brushed my arm. A quick glance down, I couldn't see a bite so focused back on getting him in the bag. Once it was in the bag i caught my breath, thanked the customer and headed off. After driving for a little bit my arm started throbbing, stinging, turning red and I started feeling nauseous Thinking it was just an allergic reaction to brushing against something I headed home first to treat it before I released it. Im lucky I did.
Once I was home I checked the spot properly and realised that I could clearly see one puncture site and scratch. It hadn't just brushed my arm but was a proper bite by a 1.5 meter Redbelly. Within minutes of realising i had put the snake in a lock box still in the bag, called Jackson Burgess who luckily was able to come release it for me, let my wife know and was off to hospital.
After a day in hospital I was lucky enough to be able to head home. My arm is still hurting from the bite after all this time and I'm taking that as a reminder of what has happened.
I can't thank the dalby hospital staff enough for all the care they showed and the work they did to look after me while I was there. Im forever grateful to Jackson for handling releasing the Redbelly. Knowing it was done right and safely was a huge load off my shoulders so I could focus on what was happening.
If there is any chance at all you've possibly been bitten by a snake, even if your not certain, Dont hesitate. Wrap the bite with a bandage and get it checked. Be safe.
