Dr Wilson retired in 2018, and left with AAD his legacy, and Australia in a stronger position with Veterinary Dentistry. Dr Tucker became full partner with Dr Forsayeth and together they have taken AAD forward.

🦷 Why Do Pets Need Tooth Extractions? 🐶🐱

While preserving teeth is always the goal, sometimes extractions are the best treatment for your pet’s health and comfort.

Certain dental conditions such as tooth resorption, advanced periodontal disease, and fractured teeth may require extraction. Additionally, inflammatory disease processes like Chronic Canine Ulcerative Stomatitis (CCUS) and Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) cause severe inflammation inside the mouth, which can make extraction the most effective way to relieve pain and improve your pet’s quality of life.

🦷 Gingival Enlargement (Hyperplasia) in Dogs 🐾

Have you noticed your dog’s gums looking swollen, puffy, or overgrown? This may be gingival enlargement — an overgrowth of gum tissue that can partially or completely cover the teeth.

🔍 Common causes include:
• Breed predisposition (Boxers, Bulldogs, Collies)
• Chronic inflammation from dental disease
• Certain medications
• Systemic or hormonal factors

This excessive gum tissue can create pockets where food and bacteria collect, leading to bad breath, infection, and periodontal disease. While often painless at first, it can become uncomfortable over time, making it harder for your dog to chew and maintain good oral hygiene.

🦷 Root Canal Therapy – A Tooth-Saving Option for Pets 🦷

Not all damaged teeth need to be extracted.

Root canal therapy is a specialised treatment used when a tooth becomes non-vital – meaning it’s no longer alive. This may follow a visible fracture or result from trauma that bruises the pulp (pulpitis), even if the tooth looks intact.

The procedure removes the dying, dead, or infected pulp before it leads to pain or infection. If left untreated, these teeth will eventually form an abscess, causing discomfort and further complications.

This treatment allows us to preserve important teeth like canines and carnassials, helping maintain comfort and function.

🔍 We don’t rebuild the tooth to its original shape – if fractured, sharp edges are smoothed for comfort.

📅 Ongoing follow-up is essential. Owners must be committed to routine dental radiographs to monitor long-term success.

🦷 What is enamel hypoplasia in dogs — and why does it matter?

🦷 Enamel Defects in Dogs – More Than Just Cosmetic! 🐶

Enamel defects in dogs are more common than you might think — and they can have a lasting impact on dental health.

✨ What causes them?
🔹 Developmental defects like enamel hypoplasia can occur due to illness or trauma during puppyhood.
🔹 Localised defects are often seen near the gumline and may be linked to early damage, such as trauma during extraction of deciduous (baby) teeth.
🔹 Excessive wear from chewing hard objects like antlers or stones can also damage enamel.

🐾 Fractured Teeth in Pets – What You Need to Know 🦷

Fractured teeth are painful and not just a cosmetic issue. When the pulp (nerve) is exposed, it leads to infection and ongoing discomfort—even if your pet seems perfectly normal.
Left untreated, these teeth can cause abscesses, jaw bone damage, and behavioural changes due to pain.

So, treat or extract?

✅ If the damage is limited, root canal therapy can be an option. It preserves what’s left of the tooth—but does not rebuild it.

❌ If the fracture is severe or extends below the gumline, extraction is the only option to relieve pain and prevent further issues.

🦷 What Is Height Reduction of Mandibular Canines? 🦷

Height reduction is a veterinary dental procedure used to treat malocclusions such as Class I (base narrow canines) and Class II (overbite) — where the mandibular (lower) canines are In the wrong position and cause trauma to the palate, gums, or maxillary (upper) teeth.

The procedure involves cutting the affected mandibular canine/s down to the level of the mandibular incisors to eliminate traumatic contact.

This is followed by a vital pulpotomy, which preserves the health and function of the tooth by keeping it alive.

🩺 Follow-up dental radiographs are essential to monitor the long-term health of the treated tooth and ensure continued vitality.

🦷 Height reduction is indicated when:
• The mandibular canine is causing soft tissue or tooth trauma
• Orthodontic correction isn’t practical
• Tooth preservation is preferable to extraction

Advanced Animal Dentistry formed in 2006 when Dr Aaron Forsayeth joined Dr Gary Wilson with his already successful Veterinary Dental referral practice. With the creation of Advanced Animal Dentistry, the referral work expanded across south east Queensland, and has since allowed us to work in many other parts of Australia. As leaders in Veterinary Dentistry in Australia, Advanced Animal Dentistry provides a referral practice to Veterinarians for difficult dental cases; ongoing tertiary education for Veterinary Students in both Veterinary Science and Veterinary Tech courses provided by the University of Queensland; education services for Veterinarians and Nurses online and in-house; Lecturing and workshop opportunities at Veterinary Conferences throughout South East Asia. We continued to expand and in 2015 we took on board a resident, Dr Rebecca Tucker. Dr Tucker has quickly made a place for herself in the practice, and provides another great mind and set of hands to our business - allowing Advanced Animal Dentistry to provide more help to Australian pets.

2017 saw expansion into two new established Veterinary Referral Hospitals - Veterinary Specialist Services at Jindalee, and Queensland Veterinary Specialists in North Lakes. Through the year recognistion finally came for Dr Gary Wilson’s amazing knowledge and experience in all Veterinary Dentistry, with him being recognised as a Registered Specialist. Dr Rebecca Tucker is coming close to the end of her formal residency, and Dr Aaron Forsayeth was finally granted permission to start a residency in Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery - the first person to ever do so.
