🗣️Let’s talk about DVL2 🗣️

What is it?
DISHEVELLED 2 is an identifiable gene found in some breeds of canine.

Description
A shortened and kinked tail—which is referred to as a “screw tail” — is one of the distinctive morphological traits that characterizes Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Boston Terriers, which were historically developed from the Bulldog breed and, thus, closely related breeds.
The ‘screw tail’ is caused by a variety of malformed and fused vertebrae and lack of approximately 8 to 15 caudal vertebrae.n addition to the Dvl2 frameshift mutation, the three Bulldog related breeds harbor other mutations in developmentally important genes that could affect their craniofacial morphology.

Has this gene been found in the Cane Corso ???
Yes some symptomatic dogs and puppies within Australia have been identified and tested and are now awaiting the genetic results to confirm. Other countries have already confirmed!!!!

Can it be treated ?
Short answer would be no
Being a genetic issue there is no treatment other than to doc the affected tail. In most cases the kinked tail is harmless but in some rare cases the kink can also cause bowel issues. For a more detailed explanation please conduct your own research

The best way to eliminate this known health issue within the breed is to simply prevent it. By genetically testing your canine and being cautious about what pairings are made we can prevent the further spread of DVL2.

Much like DSRA, affected dogs can still be bread as longs as your selective and have already confirmed your not breeding it with another affected dog. You can use this chart attached as a reference.

It’s our hope here at Ancient Empire that we have a powerful and positive impact on the breed and to ensure future generations can benefit from the lessons we have learnt.

We are pleased to announce that just like DSRA testing we have contacted Orivet and added DVL2 testing to the Cane Corso breed profile.

Many thanks to the following people for creating awareness and getting this across the line.
