🚨Rescue Story 🐢 — Eastern Long Necked Turtle 💚

🚗 This beautiful Eastern long-necked turtle was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road, likely moving between wetlands. Sadly, this is something we see far too often — but this story has a hopeful ending.

☺️ A kind passerby stopped, safely moved the turtle off the road, and contacted wildlife rescue. Thanks to their quick actions, the turtle was rushed to RVC - Rhodes Veterinary Clinic for urgent care.

👨‍⚕️ The team worked carefully to clean and stabilise the injuries, even repairing the cracked shell so it can begin the healing process. While it’s a long road to recovery, this little survivor is now stable and will soon head into specialised wildlife care at Wildlife Rescue Rangers INC.

💛 A huge thank you to the Good Samaritan who stopped to help — you truly made a difference.

⚠️ Please remember to slow down near wetlands and keep an eye out for wildlife crossing.

🐢 We wish this resilient turtle a smooth recovery and hope to see it back where it belongs soon.

It started with a call from a concerned member of the public.

An injured pelican had been spotted, its wing badly damaged. Rescuers Benny and Trent made several attempts to catch the bird, but each time it managed to evade them.

The pelican had taken refuge in the middle of a creek channel that fed into the lake. With it being deep, fast-flowing water that made any rescue incredibly difficult.

The next day, they returned.
There he was again, resting in the middle of the channel. Weak, but still alert. Trent realised this might be their best chance.

The pelican couldn’t move far on land without losing balance, and if they acted quickly, they might finally reach him. As soon as the pelican noticed them, everything changed.
He began to move, trying to escape toward the open lake.

There was no time to hesitate. Trent sprinted forward, then dove straight into the creek. The cold water slowed him, but he pushed through, swimming hard to reach the opposite side. Pulling himself out, he charged across the muddy bank, each step sinking deep beneath him.

The pelican was almost in the water.
With one final push, Trent closed the distance and reached him just in time, stopping him from escaping. He stayed calm, gently securing the bird to keep it from panicking. Up close, the injury was worse than they feared. The wing was completely broken — a clean snap, with bone exposed.

Working together, Benny and Trent carefully carried the pelican back across the water and onto solid ground.

From there, they transported him to the RVC - Rhodes Veterinary Clinic as quickly as possible.

Despite their efforts, the injury was too severe. The kindest option was euthanasia.

It was a heartbreaking end. No one wants a rescue to finish that way.
But there was some comfort in knowing the pelican was no longer suffering.

He wouldn’t endure days of pain, starvation, or the risk of being attacked by predators.

He didn’t die alone in the wild.
Instead, he was given care, dignity, and peace at the end.

And sometimes, that’s what rescue really means.

Please give water to wildlife 💧

If you've been able to return home, please put out clean water for wildlife. Many animals have lost their usual water sources and are moving through burnt and unburnt areas looking for help.

Even a bowl would make a huge difference.

***We will be making some pvc water stations for land owners to put throughout their properties - please get in touch if you would like one, or checkout the video below to make your own if you're handy.

🐨 Dog Attack

This afternoon saw our rescuers respond to a Koala attacked by dogs in a backyard in Camperdown.

Upon arrival the team managed to rescue the koala that was up a nearby apple tree.
