Yesterday a couple of boys lost their goodie bags. One of our amazing vets came to geld some of our jack foals and microchip everyone. Donkeys are put under general anaesthesia and ligated during castration primarily because their anatomy features much larger, more robust blood vessels supplying the testicles than horses so they have a higher risk of fatal hemorrhage compared to a horse. Douglas here is asleep, I am just holding his leg up for my vet out of her way. The mums hover a little but we’re mostly concerned with why they had not yet been fed their breakfast. When the boys wake up we help keep them steady while they find their feet and they go back to mum. Sometimes we will geld after weaning (I find both work fine personally though many prefer to do it before), but the weather is good at the moment so this time it was before they are weaned.

It’s ok. I’ll work around you Juliette……Cleaning up the barn after I locked all the mums and bubs in here the other night because they were choosing to stay out in the paddock looking like someone was holding a gun to their head while we received 100ml of rain, rather than take shelter in one of 2 stables, a shed or the barn, with 4 stables. Juliette here is the only one with a brain. But then she doesn’t really leave the barn that often.

Today was the very best day EVER! Today, our girl Dimittee scanned in foal. I have been trying to get Dimittee and another of our jennies in foal for coming up two years. They are both maiden jennies, we tried different jacks, tracked cycles, checked for pre joining and post joining fluids, and had no pregnancies. Today she and our other girl were being scanned to track their cycles to prepare to send them to a reproductive equine vet next week. And then this happened! I screamed. I triple checked I had the right donkey (I have made that mistake before) , and screamed again. She is in foal to our dark jack Checkmate.

We are using our slow feed bins in some of the donkeys paddocks at the moment to try and draw out their breakfast experience given the paddocks are pretty well down to dirt and ants now. Just a cherry picker barrel with holes and tie her to a tree. They work a treat as demonstrated here by Juliette, who is here for a holiday with her friend Tango.
