Berty was only 8 weeks old when he referred to BVRS from as a tiny Domestic Shorthair kitten from the with right hind limb lameness and radiographs showing a fracture of his right femur.

To stabilise the fracture, Berty underwent a minimally invasive plate repair called MIPO performed by Dr Sarah. This technique uses small incisions to place a plate along the bone, helping support the fracture while preserving the surrounding soft tissues as much as possible.

Despite being so little, Berty did beautifully and recovered well from the surgery- the worst part for him was wearing the cone and staying put in confinement (Sorry Berty, both are essential for post op recovery).

At his recheck, his incision had healed well, he had full comfortable movement of the leg and has now graduated from our care. 💙

We wish Berty the best on his journey!

Lucy, an 8 year old Greyhound, recently underwent a right hind limb amputation after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone tumour affecting her lower leg.

While this diagnosis is never easy, advanced imaging showed no obvious spread to the lungs which gave Lucy a really positive outlook.

Since surgery, Lucy has been working hard in her rehab sessions, focusing on building strength, balance, and confidence as she adapts to life on three legs.

Her treatment includes:
✨ Laser therapy to support healing
✨ Massage and stretching to reduce muscle soreness
✨ Guided exercises to improve stability and coordination

Like many dogs early in recovery, Lucy has a few sore spots and is still gaining confidence, but she’s showing us just how resilient and strong she is.

📸 Here she is post-op, happily enjoying some chicken- which if IYKYK, getting patients eating again can be one of the hardest challenges of recovery!

We’re so proud of Lucy and are enjoying seeing her continue to thrive 🐕💛

Elroy the 14 year old Tonkinese was enjoying a little extra TLC with Kristy during his K-Laser therapy session 💙
Targeting his T1–T4 spine and both elbows, this treatment is helping manage osteoarthritis and keep him feeling as comfortable and mobile as possible in his golden years.
✨ SO What are the benefits of laser therapy?
K-Laser is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate healing at a cellular level. It can:
• Reduce inflammation and swelling
• Relieve pain and stiffness
• Improve mobility and joint function
• Accelerate tissue repair and healing
• Increase blood flow to affected areas
For patients like Elroy, it’s a gentle and effective way to support ageing joints and improve quality of life 🐾
We love seeing our senior pets staying active, comfortable, and happy!

Floki putting in the WORK 💪🐾

This gorgeous 16 year old floof owned by receptionist Tegan from Kippax had a PT session with Kristy recently, and he absolutely smashed it!

Kristy says he’s the most flexible and agile 16 year old floof she’s ever worked with… and honestly, we believe it, especially after seeing this video!

Age is just a number when you’re this fabulous 🤍

Ollie came in for radiographs recently, but we’re pretty sure he stayed for the complimentary cuddles!

Whilst radiographs help us get a closer look at what’s happening beneath the surface, a little extra TLC is always an important part of the visit too.

Ollie was an absolute superstar for his imaging and made himself very comfortable with the team along the way, soaking up plenty of pats, scratches and attention.

Nelson, a sweet 8 year old neutered male DSH, was referred to us in February by Gungahlin Veterinary Hospital after a difficult few weeks of urinary issues that progressed to a complete blockage, which is a life-threatening emergency.

Nelson had been straining to urinate since mid-January, and despite medical management, became fully obstructed in early February. A urine culture confirmed a UTI (Staphylococcus schleiferi), alongside ongoing issues with crystal formation.

So why does this happen?

Many cats develop Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease - a condition involving inflammation, crystals, infection and stress. Male cats are especially at risk due to their narrow urethra, which can easily become blocked.

Given Nelson’s recurrent obstruction, the BVRS team performed a perineal urethrostomy (PU) - a procedure that creates a wider urinary opening to help prevent future blockages.

Since surgery, Nelson has recovered beautifully. He’s now urinating comfortably and back to feeling much more like himself.

Nelson was an absolute legend throughout his treatment and we’re pretty sure he enjoyed that little trip to space with his pre-medication on board 💙🐱

Charlie is a 13 year old Spoodle who was referred to our team by Dr Annalise at after a lump on his right shoulder began to grow more rapidly over recent months.

Despite its size (10 x 8 cm), Charlie remained his happy self - active, comfortable, and completely unbothered by the mass.

Charlie underwent a marginal resection of a suspected soft tissue sarcoma (STS), followed by reconstruction using an axial pattern flap to close the defect.

So, what is a soft tissue sarcoma (STS)?

STS are a group of tumours that arise from connective tissues such as fat, muscle and fibrous tissue. They can feel deceptively benign and are often soft, movable and painless but can be locally invasive and require careful surgical planning to achieve good outcomes.

Because of their behaviour, early investigation and removal is always recommended, especially if a lump is changing in size.

Charlie recovered beautifully from surgery and is back to doing all his normal activities 💙

Harvey recently visited Dr Sarah for advice regarding hip dysplasia. For now, his care plan is focused on conservative management, combining massage, targeted stretches, and laser therapy sessions with our wonderful rehab-extraordinaire Kristy alongside a tailored home physical therapy program to help keep him comfortable and moving well.

Harvey is a big boy with a sensitive side and can sometimes feel a little anxious or reactive in new situations. His wonderful owner Ashlea takes no chances and brings him in wearing his basket muzzle, ensuring everyone stays safe and stress-free during visits.

Despite his nerves, Harvey has always been the goodest boy with Kristy, who absolutely loves the relationship and trust that she's building with him.

Watching patients like Harvey grow in confidence while supporting their mobility is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do 💙

We can’t wait to see Harvey continue to progress on his rehab journey!
