We have 3 Maisie’s at BB&C! And while this Maisie really isn’t a “baby” anymore she was the “baby” of the Maisie’s when she first started with us and the name has stuck!

Is learning some skills around greeting and initiating play.

These can be tricky skills for brachycephalic breeds due to their different facial structure.
Firstly, their eyes are set more frontally than other breeds which can give other dogs the impression they are hard staring when they are not. Without support other dogs can get the wrong impression.
Secondly, they need to get much closer in order to smell the other dogs in greetings, which can be perceived as being too forward and rude.
Thirdly, they then often need much longer durations to sniff in order the draw in enough scent to process. This can feel invasive and inconsiderate and by the time they receive enough scent the message they receive from that odour is defensive.

This is where good social guidance and support can make all the difference.
We will support Amy in ways that will reduce the chances of her inadvertently offending her playmates while she practices greetings.
This will give her a new odour baseline to guide her in a natural feedback process, so she can self evaluate her own techniques.

Slow, gentle approaches will smell more relaxed and receptive. For the social brain this is deeply rewarding.
