🐣 10 weeks old Elio trained hard today learning markers, exposure to his barking neighbour dog, nail trimming and learning about where to toilet.
🧶 We introduced his collar on and leash and how to feel good about them as well as ways to avoid separation distress when his owners are busy.

Away / Leave it command gives you the opportunity to avoid sticky situations by communicating to your dog at a distance to not approach an area, object, person or dog. Displays reactivity to dogs when feeling vulnerable so we worked on understanding what options she has instead of responding with aggressive behaviours.
We gradually exposed her from mellow to more active and provocative dogs to teach and reward positive and neutral behaviours from Nisha. ⚖️

Here are a couple of over the fence encounters Nisha had with new dogs. She is choosing to sniff to assess and learn about the other dog as well as moving away when encouraged. 🥳

Training and practicing skills during walks has many benefits:
1. To strengthen and proof behaviours.
2. For the dog to generalise skills by practicing behaviours in different environments.
3. To keep the dog engaged with you and more likely to follow commands even in the presence of alternate motivators.
4. To provide mental stimulation on top of the physical engagement of a walk or run.

From time to time I practice hand signals commands alone so that Ted can respond to them when he is far away, if I am talking or we are in a quiet environment.
