Why is transport funding so important to Stray to Stay?

Stray to Stay rescues predominantly in the remote Indigenous communities up in Cape York.
Whilst we work extremely closely with rural and regional pounds across the whole of FNQ, our biggest challenge with rescuing animals is transport costs associated with our Cape rescues.

This is purely because of the remoteness of the location - sometimes 14+ hours to the closest vet clinic. Half the year, the roads are inaccessible, leaving us with no other option than a flight.

Flights range from $200-$700 depending on the size of the animal. As you can imagine, this takes a huge hit to our funds, however, it is a completely necessary and unavoidable cost.

Thanks to an initial donation made by Pets Domain and SavourLife, we have been able to transport Fanta from Bamaga to Cairns for emergency vet care after she was bit by another dog and obtained a fracture to her face.
This ‘Freedom Ride Ticket’ helped save Fanta’s life as infection was impacting her breathing significantly.

Thanks to the Road to Rescue Campaign, additional funding can by unlocked throughout September based on SavourLife purchases at Pets Domain.

So what is a ‘Freedom Ride Ticket’?
A Freedom Ride Ticket represents the funding required to transport one rescue pet from rural or regional pounds into the safety of a rescue group.
Each ticket helps to cover the transport costs that give a dog or cat the opportunity for a second chance.

Oaka’s mid morning nap 😴

❤️ OAKA’S NEW BEGINNING - AMPUTATION COMPLETE ❤️

For everyone who followed Oaka’s story, donated, shared her posts, checked in on her or simply cared about this beautiful girl - we have an update.

Oaka had her leg amputated on Friday. 🥹❤️

Her leg was badly broken and had been left untreated for far too long. By the time she came into care, there was unfortunately no way to save it. After everything this poor girl had already endured, we knew she deserved the chance to finally be free from the pain and start healing.

And thanks to our incredible community, we were able to make that happen. ❤️

We asked for help raising the funds for her surgery, and people stepped up. Donations, shares, messages of support - every single bit of it helped get Oaka to this point.

Oaka is now a three-legged girl, but that certainly isn’t going to slow her down. 🐾

She has a long way to go yet. She needs time to recover, regain her strength and, most importantly, learn that life can be safe, comfortable and full of love.

After everything she has been through, this girl deserves nothing less.

We cannot thank everyone who helped Oaka enough. ❤️ Whether you donated $5, shared her fundraiser, offered words of encouragement or simply followed along with her journey - you were part of getting her here.

Now begins the next chapter.

Heal, Oaka. You’ve got this, beautiful girl. 🐾❤️

Say hello to Pup Pup!🐾

Pup Pup is on the look out for her forever family, and is eagerly waiting for them to meet her! This confident and independent American Staffy mix loves everyone and wants to be a part of everything you do. She loves her playtime and walks, but is just as happy curling up beside you for cuddles.

She has met people of all ages, including young children, and is keen on everyone. Pup Pup is confident around other dogs, and has been introduced to a variety of farm animals including goats, sheep, and cows. She has been introduced to chickens as well, but does need to be leashed around them.

Pup Pup is a very motivated learner, and is making good progress in her training! She is already crate trained, and is currently working on her lead training and recall. Although her foster parents will miss her deeply, Pup Pup is ready to find her forever home!

Pup Pup has been microchipped, desexed, and has received her first puppy vaccination. Her $400 adoption fee will cover her remaining puppy vaccinations and her preventative to date.
