Got this nice albino (het hyper melanistic) out for some sunshine today ☀️ 🌴

A little extra sunshine for the blueys

They’re already housed outdoors year-round, but living in Cairns means plenty of cloud, rain and humidity - especially during the wet season ⛈️. The sunning enclosures gives them a chance to soak up some extra natural sunlight whenever the weather plays nice ☀️🌿

Let’s talk about appropriate enclosure design for Emerald Tree Monitors (Varanus prasinus) indoors and outdoors. 🌿🦎

Keeping an animal successfully shouldn’t simply mean providing enough space for it to exist.

For a highly arboreal and active species like V. prasinus, enclosure design should consider how that animal actually uses its environment. Climbing, exploring, thermoregulating, seeking cover, hunting and choosing where it wants to spend its time.

That means providing usable vertical space, complex climbing structure, appropriate lighting and heating, environmental gradients, shelter and opportunities for natural behaviour.

Indoor and outdoor enclosures will obviously look very different, and there isn’t one perfect design. What matters is whether the enclosure is built around the biological and behavioural requirements of the species.

Swipe through for some examples of how we approach housing our Emerald Tree Monitors at Grass is Greener Reptiles.

Good husbandry should aim beyond keeping an animal alive, it should give it the opportunity to behave like the species it is.

We have had a great past few months, clutch after clutch. The incubator is full and we can’t wait to get more of these into the Australia hobby. 🦎
