Interesting facts on Walers:

*The Australian Waler is an Australian horse, which traces its genesis/origins back to the first Fleet. The horses were known as the “Horses from New South Wales”, or Walers. Notably, Waler horses served with distinction for Australian military in three wars.

* The Australian bred Waler horses quickly became the “all purpose” horse that helped in the development of the early colony of New South Wales, and the ensuing exploration and development of the entire country. They were riding horses, carriage, coach, and wagon horses and they also pulled the plough. They also became invaluable stock horses on cattle and sheep stations across the country.

*Walers show strong bone and tendons and large well-developed joints; feathering is a common feature. Their head is a generally good even shape with a convex nose, the neck of medium length, and the hindquarters powerful with a broad rump sloping to a low set, full sweeping tail. All colours are acceptable except Albino and Cremello. Their attributes are frugality, strength, athleticism, a quiet temperament and the special way they bond with their owner.

PHOTOS FROM THE BUNDABERG COUTRY DRESSAGE GROUP DRESSAGE CLINIC HERE AT CB EQUESTRIAN CENTRE WITH COACH COURTNEY.

what a wonderful clinic and fantastic turnout we had for our dressage clinic last Sunday. Not only did we have 13 riders all up with all spots filled plus one. We also had a fantastic turnout of spectators.

All the riders did such a wonderful job, and a big thank you to everyone that helps set up the day.❤️🙏

This clinic we focused on tips that we could pick up within our dressage test to earn more points, taking away some exercise to improve your horses way of going that included cones and poles so you could set it up at home, and finally the horsemanship aspect of groundwork and some horsemanship techniques under saddle that you could use to help your horse find relaxation at a show. Each group covered something a little different but below are some dot points of just a few takeaways.

🔹 when riding a circle in a dressage test there are four main points A judge is looking for if you can look to produce these four things, you will look at a good mark for your circle. These are: circle accuracy, rhythm, relaxation and correct bend/balance. If you can secure these four points in your circle, then you should look at a good mark especially in the base levels.

🔶 where you put your focus your horse can feel. So when looking at riding a centre line continue to keep your eyes and your focus on a point that is straight ahead past C even when you do your halt try not look down or to the side because that may be enough to slightly adjust your position and cause the horse to step sideways or lose its straighteness. If your horse is struggling to remain straight, you may also slightly widen your hands and create an arrow pointing forward with the reins and hold them with light even pressure and focus on driving your horse from behind between both legs and hips and equally through both reins to your focus point.

🔷 when looking for relaxation always remember that if you can get your horse to focus on you in a calm manner that will help your horse feel more secure. If my horse is anxious I would rather spend some time at the competition to do a little gentle ground work. This may look like simply getting the horse to walk forward on the lead when you walk. Stop when you stop and back up when you back up, keep the horse respecting your space and try to continue to get the horse to put some focus on you so they start to read your body language and focus on tasks. Giving them simple and easy to achieve tasks with a calm manner will help them go from their reactive side of their brain to their thinking side of their brain.

🔶 horses synchronise with your heartbeat. They can feel your heartbeat from 6 feet away and they have the ability to synchronise with it and other horses around. If you want your horse to feel calm create that focus on you from your horse. Get them to have a good connection with you and then practice box breathing breathing for four seconds hold it for four seconds and slowly breathe out as long as you can. This will help slow your heart rate down and in return will then help your horse also find calmness.

I hope everyone enjoyed the clinic and I look forward to our next clinic this Saturday 🥳🥳
