From may 17 I posted on our litter page 😀
Now that we know Dinah is officially carrying puppies, we’ll be making a few changes to keep both her and the babies as safe as possible over the coming weeks 🥰
That means pressing pause on our big offlead weekend bush walks and her herding sessions. which honestly makes me a little sad because the sheep are one of her favourite things. And by “bush walks”… I really mean full speed bush hoon sessions where the dogs run their little hearts out 🤭
As much as she’d happily keep launching around with the others, it’s important that we avoid the risk of rough play, collisions, slips, or her overdoing it while pregnant.
So now comes the challenge of keeping her fit, active, and mentally happy in safer ways. This morning’s exercise was a “totally necessary” coffee run to the local cafe for my partner tiling our laundry (despite owning a perfectly good coffee machine at home 🤣). We’ll also be mixing in things like controlled treadmill work, quieter walks, and possibly some low speed bike sessions so she can still stretch her legs safely without the chaos of her housemates involved 🥴

Border Collies are true creatures of habit and ive taken to acclimatising Dinah early to our whelping room as her usual routine has her eating dinner in her crate and 2 years of that routine doesn't change over night 😅
In the mid/later stages of pregnancy Dinah has taken to drooling over food (including mine) and after a short period of morning sickness early on her appetite has finally kicked in and is fast fueling those little beans inside her now growing at a rapid rate!

Rainy long weekend puppy room prep (no doubt it will change again with our ever changing needs) however today we've spent some time putting the lino in to protect our flooring along with checking our temp monitoring, camera plans, heating pad and scales making sure it will all work for us so there are no emergency runs for anything we could've prevented ☺️
Not long now 😱

One thing I don't think people often see is the weight of the decisions that come with breeding and the responsibility is something i speak about often.
For most people, a litter is exciting. Tiny puppies, puppy photos, and the anticipation of bringing home a new best friend. And while for me it is all of those things, it is also watching one of my own beloved dogs go through every stage of pregnancy and carrying the responsibility that comes with that.
Dinah isn't just a brood bitch. She's my baby. She's my work buddy, my sporting partner, my shadow, and the dog I love beyond words.
Every decision we make before, during, and after a breeding is made with her welfare at the forefront. There is a delicate balance between wanting to bring wonderful companions into the world for other families and making sure we are doing absolutely everything we can to protect the health, wellbeing, and longevity of both mum and puppies.
The health testing, pedigree research, temperament evaluations, endless reading, conversations with mentors, veterinary appointments, ultrasounds, nutrition planning, exercise adjustments, and constant monitoring aren't just boxes to tick. They're all part of trying to stack the odds in favour of healthy, happy outcomes.
Even then, breeding is humbling. Nature doesn't give guarantees.
As breeders, we make choices based on the best information available to us and with the deepest hope that we are doing right by our dogs and the families who trust us. We celebrate every milestone, worry over every change, and spend countless hours wondering if there is anything more we could be doing.
Watching Dinah grow these little lives is incredibly special, but it also serves as a constant reminder of the responsibility we carry. These puppies may one day become someone's heart dog, adventure buddy, sporting partner, or best friend. That starts long before they're born.
So while the excitement is definitely there, so is the commitment to doing things thoughtfully, ethically, and with the welfare of our dogs at the centre of every decision.
And for that reason, every healthy puppy and every healthy mum will always feel like a blessing, never an expectation. ❤️
