⚠️EASTER CHOCOLATE WARNING FOR PETS⚠️

Chocolate 🍫 is poisonous to dogs 🐶 mostly because of its theobromine content, which dogs are unable to metabolize effectively.

All types of chocolate are on the do-not-eat list but cooking chocolate, cocoa and dark chocolate generally have the highest levels of theobromine, and ingesting just a small amount of any of these can do a dog serious harm. Cooking chocolate is typically the most dangerous.

Once eaten, theobromine stimulates the nervous system, often causing an increased heart rate, increased urination and even seizures. The more theobromine that has been ingested, the worse the symptoms, so be on the lookout for the following signs of chocolate poisoning:

🐶vomiting
🐶diarrhoea
🐶increased thirst
🐶excessive panting
🐶shaking

If your dog has eaten chocolate, or if you suspect he has, give us a call or if it is out of our opening hours contact WAVES emergency veterinary hospital as soon as you can.

The vet will ask questions about the type and quantity of chocolate eaten and the weight and breed of your dog. This information helps to determine whether a toxic or lethal amount has been ingested and will dictate the type of treatment needed.
