When you’ll do anything but actually come out of the bag. A bit of an inglorious release for this guy but at the end of the day, a successful catch & release. My bag has been a bit of a safe haven for some snakes this year. Even though winter is here, they’re still getting about. An absolute beauty picked up in Tumut today.

Not my clip, but definitely worth sharing.

🐍 Snowy Valley Snake Removal – Winter Update ❄️

As winter settles over the Snowy Valley, snake activity has slowed right down—but they haven’t vanished entirely.

During the colder months, snakes enter a semi-dormant state called brumation. You’re far less likely to see them moving about, especially during those frosty mornings and crisp afternoons we get around Brungle, Tumut, Gundagai, Batlow, Adelong and surrounding areas.

That said, on the occasional sunny winter day, snakes may still come out to bask and warm up—often around rocks, sheds, woodpiles, or sunny spots close to homes.

I’ve had a handful of call-outs recently, mostly involving snakes seeking shelter in warmer, protected areas like garages, under houses, or tucked into stored materials. Completely normal behaviour—they’re just chasing stable temps through the cold.

👉 What you can do this winter:
• Keep yards tidy and minimise clutter where snakes can hide
• Take care when moving firewood, tin, or debris
• Keep an eye on pets, especially on warmer winter days
• Seal gaps around buildings where possible

If you do come across a snake, don’t try to handle it yourself. Even in winter, they’ll still defend themselves if pushed.

Snowy Valley Snake Removal is on call right through winter—ready to safely relocate any unwanted visitors.

Stay warm and stay safe,

Just an update on our little Red Belly. He’s made a full recovery & will be released tomorrow. Bloody amazing that he was all but dead just a couple of days ago.

When I arrived for this call out the customer told me that the cat had got hold of the snake again & killed it. I went in to retrieve the snake anyway. He was belly up & not moving. When I picked him up he just hung like wet spaghetti. No movement, no signs of life. As I was carrying him out to the car I saw the slightest bit of movement in him. A glimmer of hope. On closer inspection none of the puncture marks on him seemed too bad. With a bit of luck he might pull through.

This is the Eastern brown snake — considered the second most venomous land snake in the world and the deadliest in Australia.

And yet?

It’s responsible for only one or two deaths per year.

Yes, modern first aid and advanced medical care play a huge role. But the biggest reason might surprise you:

They don’t want to hurt you.

Eastern Browns are fast, alert, and highly defensive — not aggressive. Most bites happen when people attempt to handle, kill, or accidentally step on them. If left alone, they almost always choose escape over confrontation.

In fact, if you live outside major cities in Australia, you’ve probably walked past one without ever knowing.

The danger isn’t hatred.
It’s misinformation.

Snakes play critical roles in ecosystems — controlling rodent populations and maintaining balance. Fear-based myths lead to unnecessary killing, which harms biodiversity.

You don’t have to love snakes.
You don’t even have to like them.

But understanding them?
That changes everything.
