From puppyhood to a peaceful farewell 🩷

Twelve years ago, a tiny, bouncy puppy named Darla walked into the consult room for one of her very first veterinary visits with Dr Anthony. She was sweet, curious, and absolutely loved a cuddle!

Earlier this year, Dr Anthony had the privilege of seeing Darla again. This time, she was a gentle senior girl who, despite the passing years, still loved her cuddles just as much.

There is something incredibly special about caring for a pet throughout different stages of their life. As veterinarians, it's a privilege to build those relationships over the years, making it all the more meaningful when we're entrusted to help them and their family through their final goodbye.

Rest peacefully, gorgeous Darla.

Some photos capture a lifetime of love that words never could.

Last week, we had the privilege of helping this beautiful soul 'Yogi' to pass peacefully at home, surrounded by all those he loved most in this world.

10:00pm... the phone rings. 💔

A loving family has just received the news no pet owner ever wants to hear. Their beautiful girl has unexpectedly been diagnosed with inoperable cancer and is declining rapidly.
Faced with this heartbreaking moment, her family knows they want one thing above all else...

To bring her home to say goodbye.

Over the next few hours, we help coordinate everything. Working closely with the emergency hospital and an animal ambulance, we arrange for her to be transported home an hour out of Brisbane, where the rest of her family (including children and her brother, another fur baby) are waiting.

Just after midnight, we arrive.

We make her extra comfortable with pain relief, giving her family the precious gift of time. Over the next three hours, they share cuddles, favourite treats, stories, tears, and so much love. Together we honour her life and memory.

Later that morning, as most of Brisbane is beginning to wake, Dr Anthony is driving home, grateful to have helped one family say goodbye to their beautiful girl, all together, in the comfort of home.

Being available 24/7 is no easy feat. This is what it takes to answer a family's call for help. Sometimes it means driving through the night. But if it gives a family the opportunity to farewell their beloved pet peacefully and together at home, it's always worth it.

We know pets don't always choose a convenient time. When families need us, wherever we can make it happen, we'll do everything we can🩷

Every goodbye tells the story of a life deeply loved.

Recently, we had the privilege of helping one very special brown-eyed girl say goodbye peacefully at home, surrounded by the people who loved her most.

It is always an honour to be entrusted with these moments.

Rest easy, beautiful Chelsea.

Why do so many families choose to say goodbye at home? 🩷
Home is where our pets feel safest and most comfortable, and where we all like to be when we're not feeling our best.

There are no stressful car trips, waiting rooms or unfamiliar surroundings. Just their favourite bed, cosy chair or spot in the garden, with their family by their side.

Having helped many families through this process, we truly believe there is something very special about being able to say goodbye in the comfort and familiarity of home.

It's one final gift we can give our beloved pets who have given us so much 🩷

The hardest decisions don't always happen during business hours 🩷

With ill or elderly pets, sometimes things can change suddenly. A pet who was comfortable yesterday may deteriorate overnight. They may stop eating, fall, struggle to breathe, or simply let you know that it is their time in their own way.

These moments rarely happen conveniently during business hours.

That's why Furwells is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency at-home euthanasia across Brisbane and surrounding areas.

If your pet takes a sudden turn, we'll come to you, day or night, helping your pet remain in the comfort of home, surrounded by the people who love them most.

Give us a call anytime. We're always here to help 🩷

One of the most common questions we hear from families preparing for an at-home euthanasia is:

“Who should be there?” 💔
"Should children be present?"
"What about other pets?"
"Can extended family or friends be there too?"

The beautiful thing about saying goodbye to a pet at home is the flexibility, time and space to create a farewell that feels right for your pet and your family.

Read our guide below exploring children, other pets, family, and friends being present during an at-home euthanasia, including some of the common questions and worries families have.
