🌩️ Stormy Skies & Calm Puppies: Helping Your Dog Feel Safe During Thunderstorms
With the storm clouds rolling in, many puppies (and even adult dogs) may be feeling uneasy. Loud thunder, flashing lightning, and changes in air pressure can be overwhelming for sensitive ears and hearts. Here are a few ways to help your pup feel safe and supported:
🐾 Create a Comfort Zone
Set up a cozy space away from windows, think blankets, a crate, or a quiet room. Some dogs feel safest in enclosed spaces where they can retreat and self-soothe.
🎶 Soothing Sounds
Play calming music, white noise, or even a podcast to help mask the thunder. Familiar voices and gentle rhythms can work wonders.
🧸 Offer Reassurance, Not Overreaction
Stay calm and grounded. Your dog will take emotional cues from you. Gentle pats, a calm voice, and normal routines help signal that everything is okay.
🦴 Enrichment Distractions
Try a long-lasting chew, puzzle toy, or a snuffle mat to redirect focus. Engaging their brain can ease anxiety and build positive associations.
👃 Scent Support
Some pups respond well to calming pheromone sprays or diffusers (like Adaptil). Lavender oil used safely and sparingly can also help create a peaceful atmosphere.
💡 Practice Makes Prepared
If your dog struggles with storms regularly, consider desensitisation training outside of storm season. We’re happy to help guide you through it.
Remember: fear is real, but so is trust. With patience, consistency, and a little creativity, you can help your puppy weather the storm literally and emotionally.
