The first ten minutes with a new dog tell me a lot.

Not because I'm assessing them. Just because I'm paying attention.

I notice what they do when I crouch down. Whether they approach from the front or circle around. Whether they need a minute with the treat pouch before anything else can happen.

I notice what the owner looks like when they leave. Apologetic, because they've been told their dog is "a lot". Nervous, because their dog is anxious and they're not sure anyone else will understand that.

The first ten minutes aren't about getting the dog to like me.

They're about letting them decide if they want to.

Some decide quickly. Some take a few visits.

Every single one has been worth the wait.

You know you've become part of a dog's routine when they start having opinions about the seating arrangements.

Billy has opinions.

Today I walked a few dogs who can be triggered by things in their environment.

Dogs who have been asked to leave places.
Dogs who get labelled.
Dogs who get judged by their appearance.

Then I came home to Happy.

The same dog who can completely lose her mind over another dog on a walk is also the dog who greets me like this every single day.

That's the thing about dogs.

The world often judges them by the moments they struggle.

The people who love them get to see everything else.

The goofy moments.
The cuddly moments.
The moments where they're so happy to see you that they can barely contain themselves.

And honestly?
That's the version I wish more people got to see.

Beatrice 🌈

Some dogs leave a big mark without ever needing to be the loudest in the room.

That was Beatrice.
A gentle giant in every sense of the words.

Always happy to see me. Always happy to head out for a walk. Never in a rush, never causing trouble, just quietly enjoying the simple things.

She wasn't interested in chasing balls or playing wild games. She preferred cuddles, gentle adventures, and spending time with the people she loved.

The kind of dog who made everything feel a little calmer.

I'm grateful I got to know her, walk her, cuddle her, and be a small part of her story.

Run free, beautiful girl.
You were loved, and you will be missed. 🌈

No two dogs are ever the same.

One wants to explore every scent.
One wants to play fetch.
One wants to solve puzzles.
One wants to roll in something that should probably be reported to the authorities.

Getting to know each dog for exactly who they are is the part I genuinely love.

If that's the kind of care you're looking for, my DMs are open.

Anyone can walk a dog once.

The real difference starts when your dog hears the car pull up and is already waiting at the gate.

I wrote a new blog about why regular dog walking feels completely different from random bookings, especially for anxious, reactive, or routine-loving dogs.

The weird habits, the familiar routines, the trust that builds over time, and the “oh cool, it’s you” energy.

And honestly, why the best walks are not the ones where dogs come home exhausted.

A week ago, Barney was not ready.

He barked, panicked, and couldn't settle with me in the house, so I left early because he was scared.

Since then, I kept showing up slowly.
Solo visit. Still barky.
Visit with mum home. A bit braver.

Today was solo again.

First 15 minutes? Barking. So we went back to basics.
Treat toss. Step back. Wait. Let him choose.

Then he came closer.
Then he took treats from my hand.
Then the lead went on.
Then we walked.

And when we got home, he gave me the sweetest cuddle.

Sometimes the biggest wins start with a dog deciding you're not so scary after all.

Your dog walker should not be your best kept secret.

If your dog comes home calmer, happier, and properly cared for after every walk, send your friends my way. Your neighbour. Your coworker. The person constantly apologising for their bored oodle.

Tails on Trails has grown mostly through word of mouth, which honestly means more than any ad ever could.

If you refer a friend and they book a recurring walking slot, you both get $25 off.
They just need to mention your name when they reach out. No codes. No awkward influencer energy.
Just North Brisbane dogs getting the walks they actually need.

MEET HAPPY

Happy, proof that Staffies can climb.

I have never met a dog this clingy in my entire life.
Not “likes cuddles” clingy.
More “if I could crawl inside your skin and wear you as a jacket” clingy.
Bathroom trip? Supervised.
Trying to work? Not alone anymore.
Giving another dog attention? Absolutely impossible. Happy immediately appears and physically wedges herself between you and the other dog until they give up and leave.
Poor Franklin never stood a chance.

Then we go outside and suddenly she becomes a completely different animal.
Every walk is just Happy reacting to things before they’ve even fully happened yet.
Dog in the distance? Suspicious.
Leaf moved weird? Emergency.
Someone existing 400 metres away? Unacceptable.

And despite all that chaos, she somehow also became a professional fence climber.
Every time she escaped, I made the fence higher.
At this point I’ve basically become a part-time fence installer with a minor addiction to metal mesh.

The weirdest part? Her recall is incredible.
I could say almost any random word and she comes sprinting back like she’s been personally summoned.

Honestly, she’s a lot.
But adopting Happy was still one of the best decisions I ever made.

Happy birthday to my emotionally unstable mountain goat.
