Today, September 1, is National Wattle Day.

The beautiful golden wattle is our national floral emblem, a symbol that literally comes from the land beneath our feet. It’s a strong, unifying symbol for the country and a celebration of where we live, who we are and an expression of our national identity.

There are heaps of different wattles, over 1,075 types! Wattles are some of the first plants to bloom in spring and bounce back after a bushfire, a symbol of their abundance, diversity and resilience. It’s kind of like when you spot those bursts of gold everywhere…it just screams Australia, don’t you think?

Wattles are a little reminder of who we are and where we come from.

⭐ This weekend is International Bat Night(s)! 🌛

Did you know there are over 1480 bat species in the world? 🌏 Indonesia has the most bat species (175). Australia has about 90. The only continent they’re not found on is Antarctica!

They make up about 20% of all mammal species worldwide & they’re found everywhere except for extreme polar & desert regions.

They’re the only mammal to truly fly & they can swim. There are even some species that eat fish 🐟 – the Greater Bulldog Bat (Central & South America, & the Caribbean), the Fish-eating Myotis (around the Sea of Cortez).

🦇 Smallest: Kitti’s Hog-nosed Bat (Thailand, Myanmar) – 15cm wingspan, 2 grams.
🦇 Biggest: It’s a 3-way tie! The Giant Golden-crowned Flying Fox (Philippines) – 1.7 metre wingspan, 1.4kg. The Great Flying Fox (New Guinea) & Indian Flying Fox (Indian subcontinent) both weigh in at 1.6kg but have a smaller wingspan.

Bats are keystone species worldwide. They’re prolific pollinators & control insect populations. Without bats, food webs would collapse, impacting most life on earth 💀

‼️ If you see a bat on the ground or away from its colony during the day, it’s likely in trouble. Don’t touch it. Call a wildlife or bat rescue immediately.
