Pegasus News & Nutrition: Spotlight on Protein
Protein is a key nutritional requirement for all horses. However, the amount, source and quality vary depending on the horses’ life-stage, workload and feeding rate. From a nutritional point of view, protein is carefully considered during the feed formulation process. Several factors influence protein source and inclusion levels, including amino acid profile and digestibility, feeding rate, and the intended class of horse. Here are some insights into how our nutritionists approach protein in our horse feeds to ensure they meet the correct profile and quality for optimum health.

A reminder to all EWA affiliated clubs that 2027 Event Date Applications close this Sunday, 9 August 2026.

Clubs are asked to submit their preferred dates for the 2027 competition season using the relevant online application form.

When submitting your application, please:

Nominate two preferred dates for each event, where possible.
Include any relevant comments regarding scheduling restrictions, including shared venues or other commitments that may impact your preferred dates.
Check with your Club Admin before submitting, as clubs have also received this information via email.

EWA Welfare Corner - Bit Fitting

A well-fitted bit is about your horse's comfort, communication and welfare.

An ill-fitting bit can cause:
🔹 Pinching at the corners of the mouth
🔹 Pressure sores and rubbing
🔹 Tongue discomfort
🔹 Resistance, head tossing or opening the mouth
🔹 Difficulty accepting the contact

When fitting a bit, remember:
✔️ It should sit comfortably without pinching the lips.
✔️ The width should be appropriate for your horse's mouth—not too narrow or too wide.
✔️ The thickness should suit your horse's oral anatomy. Bigger isn't always kinder.
✔️ Every horse is different—what works for one may not work for another.

Many behaviours we attribute to "naughtiness" or poor training can actually be signs of discomfort. Taking the time to check your horse's bit fit is a simple step that can make a significant difference to their welfare and performance.

A comfortable horse is happier, more relaxed, and better able to understand the rider's aids.

Tegan Lush, through her equestrian journey develop an interest for bit fitting after experiencing contact issues with many of her own horses. In her quest to pursue the science of bitting she formed a partnership with South African Bit manufacturer, Bombers Equestrian, who are at the forefront of bitting technology. With Bombers Bit Fitting Accreditation clinics held and recognised around the world, Tegan was proud to become an accredited Bombers Bit Fitter and share her knowledge with us today.
