EWA Welfare Corner - FEI Code of Conduct for the Welfare of Horses

Did you know that the Federation Equestre Internationale had a Code of Conduct dedicated to Horse Welfare?

Here some key points from the Code of Conduct:

- Horse welfare always comes first: above competition and commercial interests.
- Best practice horse management includes quality feed, clean water, suitable stabling, and proper transport.
- Training must be fair and appropriate to each horse’s age, maturity, and physical ability.
- Only fit and healthy horses should compete, with adequate rest, recovery, and veterinary care.
- Zero tolerance for abuse, doping, or misuse of aids such as whips and spurs.
- Safe competition environments matter: suitable surfaces, weather considerations, and quality event facilities are essential.
- Veterinary support must always be available at events, with proper injury management and humane treatment.
- Respect beyond competition: horses deserve compassionate care throughout their careers and into retirement.
- Education is key: continuous learning helps improve horse welfare standards across the sport.

We invite you to familiarise yourself with the Code of Conduct here:
