What a wet, muddy, cold week we have had. The Hunter River covered our bottom paddocks with flood water and the ground is drenched to capacity with water sitting everywhere.
Our animals will always be our priority so The Pekins received the special treatment this week:-
- Treats of cooked egg, oats, corn kernels and oily tuna to warm them up (their favourite treat which is devoured in seconds).
- All bedding topped up and kept dry.
- Tarps, iron etc used to stop draughts and excess rain in their pens.
- Apple cider vinegar with garlic in their water.
- Small cages with Mummas and babies placed on large pieces of plywood topped with a thick layer of bedding to stop the moisture and cold seeping up through the ground.
- Our Chookies are wormed and external parasite treated every 3 months so that's important to maintain all year. It gives them the best chance of staying strong in high stress times like cold and wet.
We will monitor all our Pekins in the coming week for any signs of sickness due to the extreme weather conditions.
Today looks like it will be a beautiful sunny day to start to dry the ground and cheer everyone up. I'm sure the Pekins will be soaking up every bit of sun they can.
