Product Update ✅️

Charlie and his two sons, Daniel and Jason, are at it again! Barely recovered from picking over 8000 bunches of broccolini (yes!), they’re now trying their hands at Cauli Shoots.

These are mini cauliflowers on top of edible stems, like broccolini but with cauliflower characteristics. Not to be confused with Caulini or broccoflower which have very loose heads, Cauli Shoots have tight heads or curds, like mini cauliflowers, but with very tender stems.

They are sweet and nutty - and like with broccolini, you can eat stem, leaves and heads raw, steamed, poached, stir-fried or roasted. They are a good source of vitamins C, K, and folate, as well as B-complex vitamins, manganese, phosphorus, and fibre.

Who wants to try some next week?

Do you get confused as I do when it comes to bone broths and stocks?

Questions that come to mind immediately is when to use which? What is the difference? Which has more nutrients and less additives? Sodium content?

No worries, Choice has come to our rescue 🛟

I am a mum always going for cheaper yet less additives and sodium; to me, this chart shows my choice of The Natural Stock Co. as stock for cooking meets my priorities 💯

Not to mention the glass jar concentrate is better for our environment too! 🌏

Did you know that eating just 3 mushrooms can provide 100% of your daily vitamin D needs? All you need to do is 'tan' them!

Simply place your mushrooms in the sun for just 15 minutes, with the gills facing up to drastically increase their vitamin D levels!

These new 'super charged' levels of vitamin D will remain in the mushroom for around a week if stored in the fridge and will even remain throughout the cooking process. Pretty clever!

Thanks to our Hub sister Selina from Box Divvy St Ives - Torokina showing us here the mushrooms getting their 'midday tan' ☀🍄

A word on the strawberries

We’ll have 500g strawberries again this week. As in previous weeks, you may find the odd bruised or over-ripe strawberry in some punnets. Given the relatively low price – under $6 a punnet – we will not accept any claims unless more than say 10% has been affected. Any pic would need to clearly show this. Members are advised to stick to the 250g punnets if they want pristine fruit.

Ok here is the....
Market Update

This is the first week in a long time when we can say: the market has returned to some level of normality. Sure, there are still a few pricey produce lines – there are always some – but by and large, this is looking like a benign market in terms of supply and demand.

Best options in fruit:
• We have some good passionfruit - a hybrid variety of Panama - that's full of juice and pulp
for 75c each

• Afourer mandarins have taken over from Imperials: they're under $3 a kilo, or $19.50 for a whole box (9kg)

• Cara Cara oranges have been amazing: around $2 a kilo, or $14 for a 9-kg box

• New season blood oranges - dark red, taste like a forest in autumn, still a little over $3 a kilo - but expected to drop below $2.50 over the next few weeks.

• Seedless watermelon has been excellent - small (well, sort of: 4-5kg), whole melons for under $10 each. We've seen them in supermarkets for $23......

• Jumbo 500g punnets of strawberries from QLD for under $6

• Royal Gala apples are in surprisingly good supply this time of year: around $3.60 a kilo.

And to top it off: new season Kensington Pride Mangoes from Darwin are just starting. Large fruit size 16's at $6.49 each, and they will be at that price for at least a month. Last season was a slow starter: prices didn't start dropping until early October!

• Rockmelons, honeydew melons, kiwi, tangelo, grapefruit and lemons are all good value – but bananas and papaya are still dear, other berries are waiting for warm and dry weather in QLD (blueberries are very scarce), and pears are starting to tighten up a little.
