Our Sanctuary might be closed, but our commitment to rescuing those in need remains unwavering.
With a mission ahead, we kicked off at 6:30am, loading up cages, nets, our lure hen, food, and water.
By 7:45am, with the kids in tow, we hit the road, bound for the Cattana Wetlands in Cairns, ready to tackle the challenge. Despite traffic's best efforts to slow us, we arrived at 9:15am.
Our efforts were quickly rewarded when we encountered 7 dumped roosters, 4 of whom approached us without hesitation, making their rescue surprisingly straightforward. (We were off to a good start)
The 5th rooster took the bait, our lure hen worked beautifully, but he valiantly sent out a warning to his companions to flee, making a beeline for the safety of the tall guinea grass they went, which, I must say, looks particularly resilient, though its prickly texture can be quite challenging.
Took a refreshing break, strolling around the wetlands with the kids and our wonderful volunteer Jasmin who lent a hand.
It's 10:55am and the momentum is building - we're seizing the opportunity to catch the 6th rooster, who pushed us to our limits with an intense cardio session. Thankfully, our determination paid off and we caught him.
(Jasmine did have to leave for work) but a massive thank you for your time and effort)
While tracking down that final rooster, A lovely couple with 10 month old, asked if they could help and although the rooster proved to be quite challenging and we were not successful, their kindness and dedication showed, and I'm grateful for their efforts.
Lucky last rooster caught my eye again, so off I go. I did manage to track him down and get him in the net but he slipped my fingers, i did however manage to break the net whist trying to get him.
So it was time to call it a day at 12:55pm.
6 out of 7 caught not a bad effort.
