He doesn’t know I took this photo.
At 34, he’s gone back to uni to study Zoology.
Over the past 13 years, I’ve watched him complete wildlife and animal studies courses — including a Cert IV in Animal Studies — volunteer in wildlife rescue for over a decade, become a stay-at-home dad when our family needed it most, and start his snake catching business at 31, turning 32 quietly in the middle of his first season.
He doesn’t stop talking about animals — on dates, family outings, and at home — and all of our pets are rescues he’s brought home over the years. Thankfully, all the wild stuff stays in the bush!
In December, he stepped into a full-time role as a Wildlife Rescue and Education Officer, completing induction and training in Sydney. Outside those hours, he continues his snake catching work.
There aren’t many quiet moments, but this is one of them. Headphones on. Lectures playing. Always learning.
I’ve asked him to share some of his uni journey on here because I know sometimes kids — ours and their friends — are really interested in wildlife. Just the other day, our 4-year-old asked if bats had ears, and at a different time, wondered about owls!
We’re also curious: what learning tools, tips, or strategies have helped you get the most out of your studies?
Growth doesn’t stop. It just keeps evolving.
