π© RED FLAGS WHEN CHOOSING A DOG BREEDER π©
Looking for a puppy? Itβs important to do your homework to avoid heartbreak and support responsible breeding practices. Here are some key warning signs to watch out for:
β No Access to Mum and Pups Before Collection
A reputable breeder will always allow you to meet the mother (and ideally the whole litter) in their home environment before you take your puppy home. If they refuse or make excuses β thatβs a red flag.
β Deposits or Booking Fees Before the Litter Is Born
Be cautious if youβre being asked to pay a deposit before puppies have even arrived. Responsible breeders donβt take money until they know what puppies are available and that theyβre healthy.
β Breeding Crossbreeds Like Groodles or Labradoodles, or designer colours like mahogany or red.
ANKC-registered breeders are committed to preserving and improving purebred dogs. They do not breed designer crossbreeds. Some well known puppy farms produce Golden Retrievers and Groodles.
β Only DNA Testing Done β No Hip, Elbow, Eye or Heart Clearances
DNA tests are just one piece of the health puzzle. Ethical breeders also perform essential physical health screenings on parents, such as:
β’ Hip and elbow scoring
β’ Specialist eye exams
β’ Cardiologist heart clearances
Donβt be afraid to ask for proof!
πΎ Choosing the right breeder means prioritising health, temperament, and ethics over convenience or trends. Do your research, your future dog depends on it.
