What is Dog Training?
Dog training isn’t reserved for the unruly, it is a gift each dog should receive, compassionately.
In today's world, dog owners can achieve every behaviour & training goal they have with their dog through Progressive, Reward-Based training (Positive Reinforcement) when done correctly. But what is training? The dictionary tells us Training is: “the action of teaching a person or animal a particular skill or type of behaviour’’. Our dogs come into our lives unaware of how our very human world works. Dogs doing dog stuff doesn’t always suit us all that much and more often than not, we make them pay for it. If we follow the definition of training, we should instead be helping our dogs fit comfortably in our world, by teaching them useful skills and behaviours. This is why dog training is for every dog.
More often than not, dog trainers are called in to quickly extinguish a fire that has had the environment to grow very strong in. Fast results, and lifetime guarantees are often expected here and sometimes promised. However, working with live animals of a different species to ours, complete with their own motivations, learning histories and emotions makes the notion of guaranteeing a quick fix to their behaviours to suit our human desires, almost laughable and in all honesty, rather suspicious.
In order to successfully create behaviour modification, we must first understand what motivates our dog, look at their options for daily mental and physical activity and familiarize ourselves with common dog body language. Provided of course we have first ruled out any contributing medical influences. From there on, we can look at the presenting issues, decipher the function behind them and develop an appropriate plan to work towards achieving a realistic goal. Patience, practice and positive reinforcement is essential to success.
