I think I promised an update on the renovation project that is the Flash Hound workshop…so here it is! I’ve been setting up and getting used to the space for a few weeks now, and actually…it feels too nice to be my workshop. Finally have a space for my guitars too. Time to get creative.

A few months ago now I made a collar for our little guy Astro. He has really put his new collar through its paces. Like all puppies he likes to dart about, chase that leaf blowing past or stop right in front of you to sniff an ant on the footpath. I’m happy to report that now, at 8 months old we have a polite loose lead walking young chap. This has been the only collar Astro has worn for the last 3 months, since he outgrew his puppy harness. In that time he has been walked twice a day, every day. We have been away for our first holiday with Astro where he encountered lots of new experiences, busy traffic, meeting other dogs, unfamiliar places and people. I’m happy to say that he has never slipped his collar and remained safe and secure at all times. ( Always good to know the maker of your dog’s collar uses them on her own precious babies…right!) After 15 years of being owned by a whippet or two, I must say I prefer a properly fitted fishtail collar over a harness when it comes to training loose lead walking. I’ve known too many dogs who grew up walking in a harness for those early years and turned out to be terrible “pullers” on lead. There is certainly a time and place for using a harness, but a properly fitted traditional fishtail collar is more comfortable for your dog, looks great and more importantly, does the job of keeping them safe without harming the delicate area around the throat. (Note…the wide part of a hound collar goes across the throat when the lead is attached for this reason.)

I often wonder about all the collars I’ve made and sent out to their hounds, and ponder how they are holding up. So nice to get some feedback recently. This is Jess, who has been wearing her handmade collar now for almost 18 months. I was so happy to receive this lovely photo with a message saying “the collar (not surprisingly) still looks great”. This is why I do what I do! 😉💞🐾

Meet Mac! The Murray River Retriever. This handsome hound is sporting his new hand made, hand dyed, green and gold collar, with solid brass fittings. When Mac’s people approached me about making him a collar, I knew straight away, on one of the few truly Australian breeds of dog, it had to be green and gold. It probably doesn’t get much more Aussie than this combo.

Vinny’s new collar! I have a feeling Vinny’s mum is more excited than he is about his new collar. 🤣 Tails of Byron Bay

I’m now able to offer a Sedgwick English Bridle leather collar and lead set, with soft foam padded Napa leather lining, fully hand stitched, with solid brass (or stainless steel)fittings. This collar and lead set is the culmination of the past 5 years, honing my skills to make the best possible handmade hound collar and lead set. Reuben has been wearing his for almost 5 months and I’m really happy with it. I’m chipping away at the process of getting my website up and running with a shopping cart coming soon. In the meantime, message me on Facebook to find out colour options and pricing.

I’m back in the workshop after a few weeks of renovations. Im actually working on a room of our home that will be my new workshop. It’s not quite finished yet. Still a fair bit to do but I can’t wait to get my workbench set up in there. In the meantime, another key tag for a friend. 1958 Penny.

I’ve had a bit of interest in the penny key tags. Just wanted to do a post for anyone interested in ordering one.

I have two options available:

If you don’t need to choose a specific year I have some ready-made options made using a cutting die, saving me a bit of time, it’s a slightly different shape, using a nice veg tan 100% Australian sustainable leather. Hand stitched with two contrasting leather colours; These are $65

I can also do a custom made key tag, made to your specifications, with your choice of year (provided we have it) your choice of two colour combo hand dyed leather, hand stitched with contrast colour thread, hand cut using my own designed shape; these are $85.

If anyone would like one…please get in touch soon so I can plan my orders between now and Christmas. 😉

I made this set from a lovely piece of natural veg tanned leather that I bought from a saddler near Casino NSW. I tend to go for saddlery grade leather, especially for bigger dogs, not just for the quality and feel, but also because there is minimal stretch in equestrian grade leather. This customer needed a short lead, also referred to as a traffic lead, for a strong dog who is young and still learning manners only lead. Solid brass fittings and fully hand stitched (saddle stitch) ensures a much stronger collar than rivets can offer. With a bit of leather dressing, I think young Tucker will have this one, good collar for his lifetime. 💞🐾

Just felt a bit creative today! Wrist bands with a pattern embossed. The darker leather is an off cut of Italian leather from a belt I made. The lighter leather I actually dyed used espresso, it turned out really nice and apart from being a nice colour…it smells like coffee! Win, win situation. 😆

This is Ben (the two legged kid) and his best little mate Maxie (the four legged kid). Today is Maxie’s first Birthday and she has had a pretty good day by all accounts. With a special breakfast and treats this morning and this afternoon I dropped in with her new collar and lead set. People often ask me do I only make collars for whippets? I can make a collar for any dog. Large or small, just tell me the size and I can give some options of what I can make. It’s the best thing when I get to see the collar on the dog in a photo. But even better today was actually being there to put the collar on her for the first time and the smile on Ben’s face when he saw his much loved little girl. Made my day! 💞🐾
