Bengals are a hybrid breed, regardless of the percentage of wild genes. Toygers are considered to be hybrids as they were derived from Bengals.
The department has decided that for all hybrids to be imported they must be included in the List of Specimens taken to be Suitable for Live Import (Live Import List) as per the requirements of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Anyone can apply to include a specimen (animal/species/hybrid) on the Live import List. This involves a rigorous risk assessment of the impact of the imported specimens on the Australian environment and native species if it were to become established in the wild.
The process to amend the Live Import List is summarised in the Flowchart of the process for applications to amend the live import list to include animals.
Please be aware that amendments to the Live Import List take an average of 24 months to complete and other import conditions may apply to the specimens.
