🎄 Christmas Day is fun for us — but it can be overwhelming (and risky!) for our pets.
Here are our top tips to keep everyone safe, calm and feeling included:

✅ Create a safe retreat for pets so they can have a break from noise or crowds (even if they're sociable and friendly) and use a lead, playpen or baby gate to manage pets during busy periods.
✅ Keep food and edible gifts up high and out of reach. Plus no cooked bones, chocolate, or fatty leftovers.
✅ Stick to your usual routine where you can (like morning walks). Avoid over-exercising — over-tired dogs can make poor choices just like excitable dogs can!
✅ Secure the bin so no one goes dumpster-diving for Christmas lunch.
✅ Supervise pets around wrapping paper, ribbons and kids’ toys. Hide or protect power cords, and put fragile or edible decorations out of reach.
✅ Watch your pet with new enrichment items from Santa Paws. Always supervise the first time they interact with something to ensure they're chewing it or playing safely!

Hot ground hurts! 🔥🐾

With another hot day ahead, remember to test the pavement before heading out.

If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Dogs don’t cool down the same way we do. Exercise reduces their ability to cool themselves through panting - even walks in and around water won’t offset the heat.

When in doubt, skip the walk and choose indoor or backyard enrichment instead. If you do head out, walk early or late and stick to shaded paths - your dog (and their paws) will thank you 🐶💛

🎆Is this your dog or cat's first New Year's Eve?

While fireworks can bring joy to many, they can be a deeply distressing experience for our pets, particularly if it's their first time encountering them.

Don't forget to chat with your vet or a qualified force-free trainer for strategies that might help your pet cope with fireworks. Please take a moment to plan how to help your pet cope with the fireworks this NYE.

We ❤️ our Pet First Aid seminar with the lovely team Adelaide Veterinary Walk In Clinic on the weekend!

Our key takeaways were:
🚫 Don’t ask ChatGPT, definitely contact a vet with any questions or concerns
🩻 Ingesting foreign bodies and toxins were among the most common concerns seen, followed by bites and injuries
🐕 Dogs don’t present with the same symptoms of shock as humans
🐍 Snake bites affect cats and dogs differently. Dogs need immediate care, while cats usually have a few extra hours before urgent treatment is needed (there's no need to bring the snake!)
☀️Keep your pets safe from heat stress! Avoid taking dogs out in the sun when temperatures exceed 32°C (or 25°C for brachycephalic breeds like pugs and French Bulldogs). Protect their paw pads from hot surfaces.

We hope to run more of these info sessions for our residents.
