Jimmy, an 8-year-old Miniature Schnauzer, was referred to The Austin after presenting to his regular veterinarian with a persistent cough and difficulty swallowing.

During a sedated throat examination, his referring veterinary team discovered a large mass involving the soft palate and back of the throat. Given the location and complexity of the mass, Jimmy was referred to our specialist team for further investigation and treatment.

At The Austin, Jimmy underwent a CT scan, allowing our Surgery Team to fully assess the mass and develop a detailed surgical plan. The imaging also identified enlargement of a nearby retropharyngeal lymph node.

Following careful planning, Jimmy underwent surgery to remove the soft palate mass (staphylectomy) as well as the affected lymph node. Throughout his procedure and recovery, Jimmy was closely monitored by our dedicated veterinary nurses and specialists.

We're pleased to report that Jimmy recovered well from surgery and was soon enjoying plenty of cuddles and attention from our team. 💜

Cases like Jimmy's demonstrate the value of advanced imaging and specialist surgical care in helping us diagnose and treat conditions that can significantly impact a pet's comfort, breathing, and ability to eat.

Jimmy will continue to be monitored by our team as he progresses through his recovery, and we look forward to seeing him back to enjoying life with greater comfort.

A huge thank you to Jimmy's family and his referring veterinary team for trusting us with his care.

Ever wondered what happens inside a CT scanner?

CT (Computed Tomography) technology allows our team to see detailed cross-sectional images inside your pet’s body; helping us diagnose injuries, illnesses, and abnormalities with greater speed and accuracy.

Unlike standard X-rays, CT scans take hundreds of images from multiple angles and combine them into a detailed 3D view. This gives our veterinarians a closer look at bones, organs, soft tissues, and more.

CT imaging can help investigate:
- Orthopaedic injuries & fractures
- Neurological conditions
- Chest and abdominal diseases
- Complex surgical planning
- Nasal disease & ear conditions
- Emergency and trauma cases

Advanced imaging means faster answers, earlier treatment, and better outcomes.

When you need us, we're here to help.

Seven-month-old Nova, a beautiful Weimaraner, was recently referred to our Urgent Care team by her primary veterinarian for further investigation after becoming unwell.

As part of her diagnostic work-up, Nova underwent a CT scan under general anaesthesia. During the procedure, a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample was collected and submitted for analysis to help confirm a suspected diagnosis of Steroid-Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis (SRMA).

SRMA is an immune-mediated inflammatory condition that affects the tissues and blood vessels surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is most commonly seen in young dogs and can cause symptoms such as neck pain, fever, lethargy, and reluctance to move.

Advanced imaging and CSF analysis are important tools in diagnosing neurological conditions, allowing our specialists to develop the most appropriate treatment plan for each patient.

Nova was a wonderful patient throughout her stay, and we thank her family for trusting us with her care, as well as her referring veterinarian for their collaboration in her initial and ongoing care.

When Thor, a 2-year-old Great Dane, suddenly became unwell with wide spread swelling throughout his body, his family brought him straight to The Austin Vet Specialists seeking answers.

Thor's care began with our Urgent Care team, who performed an initial assessment and stabilised him while working to determine the cause of his sudden symptoms. From there, Thor's case was supported by several departments across the hospital, demonstrating the benefits of a collaborative specialist and emergency care centre.

As part of his diagnostic work-up, Thor underwent advanced imaging with our Radiology team, including a CT scan, allowing our clinicians to gather detailed information and investigate potential causes of his condition. His case was then reviewed by our Internal Medicine Specialist, who worked alongside our emergency clinicians and radiologists to interpret the findings and formulate a plan for ongoing care.

One of the greatest advantages of a multidisciplinary hospital is the ability for specialists and emergency clinicians to work together in real time. For Thor, this meant seamless communication between teams, rapid access to advanced diagnostics, and a coordinated approach to his treatment and monitoring.

Throughout his stay, Thor won over the hearts of our team with his gentle nature and sweet personality. Despite everything he was experiencing, he remained a much-loved patient and received plenty of attention from our nurses and clinicians along the way.

Thank you to Thor's family for entrusting us with his care. We are proud to have been part of his journey and grateful for the opportunity to work together across multiple departments to provide the comprehensive care he needed.

Mango was recently presented to our Urgent Care team after suffering superficial burns to his chest and neck.

Thankfully, Mango's owners acted quickly and provided excellent first aid at home before bringing him in for assessment. Their prompt response helped minimise further injury and gave Mango the best possible start to his recovery.

After a thorough examination, our team confirmed the burns were superficial. Mango was monitored closely, treated for his injuries, and wrapped up in a warm blanket when he became a little chilly—making sure he stayed as comfortable as possible during his visit.

Burn injuries can sometimes appear mild initially but may progress over the following hours, which is why veterinary assessment is always recommended.

Well done to Mango's family for their quick thinking and fantastic first aid efforts. We wish this brave boy a smooth and speedy recovery! 💜
