Thinking about castrating your c**t or jack?
Winter is a great time to get it done.

The cooler months are generally one of the best times of year to schedule castrations for horses and donkeys before the warmer spring weather arrives.

Some of the benefits of castrating during winter include:
• Fewer flies, helping reduce irritation and the risk of infection.
• Cooler temperatures can make recovery more comfortable and may help reduce bleeding.
• Drier conditions can help keep the incision cleaner and promote better wound healing.
• Less swelling is often seen compared to procedures performed during hot weather.
• Reduced “c**ty” or stallion-like behaviours before the onset of spring and the breeding season.
• Plenty of time for healing before spring and summer, when flies become more active.

After castration, it’s important to follow your veterinarian’s aftercare instructions. Controlled exercise is often recommended to help reduce swelling, and the surgical site should be monitored closely for excessive swelling, discharge, bleeding, or signs of discomfort.

If you’re considering having your horse or donkey castrated, now is the perfect time to book in before the spring rush. Give us a call on 0405 804 606 to discuss the procedure or arrange an appointment.

A Shout Out to Our Amazing Clients & Patients 🐴

One of the best parts of being an equine vet is working with owners who go above and beyond for their horses.

A little shout out to some of our wonderful patients and, just as importantly, the people behind them. The time, dedication and care that goes into keeping these horses happy, healthy and performing at their best never goes unnoticed.

Whether they’re out eventing, flying around the showjumping ring, dancing in the arena, playing polo, or simply being someone’s much-loved paddock companion, great horse care is what makes it all possible.

It’s a privilege to be a small part of their journey and to help keep these incredible horses feeling and performing their best. Thank you to all of our amazing clients for trusting us with your horses. We love celebrating your successes and seeing all your hard work pay off.

We’d love to be part of your horse’s journey too. Whether you have questions about their health, want to keep them feeling and performing at their best, or simply need some advice, Sarah is always happy to help.

Feel free to get in touch on 0405 804 606, we’d love to support you and your horse. 💙🐴

🦇 Hendra Virus – Is Your Horse Protected? 🦇

With flying foxes active across our region, Hendra virus remains a real risk for horses and the people around them. It’s a serious disease that can be passed from bats to horses, and from horses to humans — and unfortunately, it’s often fatal to both horses and humans.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect not just your horse, but also your family, your vet, and anyone handling your horse. Even horses that seem low risk can be exposed through contaminated feed, water, or paddocks. Veterinarians are obliged to perform a Hendra virus exclusion test prior to providing treatment to any unvaccinated horse displaying signs consistent with Hendra virus, which can result in critical delays of up to 72 hours in providing potentially life-saving treatment to your horse.

What to look out for:
🦇Fever
🦇Depression or sudden behaviour changes
🦇Loss of appetite
🦇Respiratory signs (nasal discharge, breathing difficulty)
🦇Neurological signs (unsteadiness, twitching, head pressing, aimless walking)
🦇Colic signs (abdominal discomfort, sweating, rolling)

If you notice any of these signs, please contact your vet immediately.

We are currently offering a Hendra Protection Package to make it easy to stay on top of your horse’s health. The package includes the Hendra vaccination, microchipping for horses not already microchipped, and a basic health check for $135. If your horse is already microchipped, the Hendra vaccination and basic health check are available for $120. There is also the option to add a full health blood panel for an additional $125 (haematology and biochemistry) to provide a more in-depth look at your horse’s overall wellbeing.

Contact us to organise your horse’s Hendra vaccination and help keep your horse, your family, and your veterinary team protected.
