Thinking about castrating your c**t or jack?
Winter is a great time to get it done.
The cooler months are generally one of the best times of year to schedule castrations for horses and donkeys before the warmer spring weather arrives.
Some of the benefits of castrating during winter include:
• Fewer flies, helping reduce irritation and the risk of infection.
• Cooler temperatures can make recovery more comfortable and may help reduce bleeding.
• Drier conditions can help keep the incision cleaner and promote better wound healing.
• Less swelling is often seen compared to procedures performed during hot weather.
• Reduced “c**ty” or stallion-like behaviours before the onset of spring and the breeding season.
• Plenty of time for healing before spring and summer, when flies become more active.
After castration, it’s important to follow your veterinarian’s aftercare instructions. Controlled exercise is often recommended to help reduce swelling, and the surgical site should be monitored closely for excessive swelling, discharge, bleeding, or signs of discomfort.
