Last week I had another opportunity to get my regular “donkey fix” — and as always, it was a memorable day. From the impeccably timed chorus of braying (inevitably coinciding with the most important part of a conversation) to the rewarding confirmation of strong heartbeats in gestating foetuses, it was a wonderful balance of personality and professionalism.

What makes days like this especially meaningful is not only time spent with these charming, long-eared characters — and yes, a few cuddles with some fluffy foals — but also the opportunity to strengthen relationships with dedicated owners. Quality veterinary care is built on trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to animal wellbeing, and it’s always a privilege to work alongside clients such as the Last Stop Donkey Program who care so deeply for their animals.

It’s also an important reminder that while donkeys are part of the equid family, they differ significantly from horses in many key aspects — including their pain tolerance and some of the ways they display discomfort, as well as appropriate drug dosages and dosing intervals for common medications. Preventative healthcare remains essential: vaccinations, farriery, strategic deworming, dentistry, and careful weight management all play a critical role in long-term health and wellbeing.

🐴 Proud to Support the Rodeo Community! 🤠

I'm excited to share that Equine Medicine Consulting recently had the privilege of serving as the on-site veterinarian for the APRA 2025 Ariat National Finals Rodeo at White Park in Scone.

Playing a part in the APRA National Finals and supporting these incredible athletes is at the heart of what we are striving to do. It was an honour to play a part in such a prestigious event and support the competitors, stock contractors, and the amazing horses who make the rodeo world so special.

A huge thank-you to the organisers, competitors, and the entire rodeo community for putting on a fantastic event. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

The referral level care is designed to supplement and support the treating veterinarian. Whether you want a one-off consultation on a challenging case or you would like on-farm support for the management of more intensive cases (such as sick foals or adults), Equine Medicine Consulting brings years of hospital and ICU experience to your patients, on site.

Dr Sarah Gough is an Australian and European registered specialist in equine internal medicine, boarded with the European College of Equine Internal Medicine, and has spent over ten years working in equine specialist referral hospitals. Sarah has a broad experience of specialist level cases from adult and neonatal intensive care, diagnosis and management of endocrine and metabolic diseases, diagnosis and management of ophthalmological diseases and emergencies, cardiac workup, poor performance workup, and neurological assessments. Sarah is excited to offer these services on farm as a mobile specialist, as well as providing specialist telehealth consulting to support equine practitioners with challenging cases across the country.

Equine Medicine Consulting offers both routine equine veterinary services as well as specialist equine referral case assessment and treatments.

Dr Sarah Gough is an Australian and European registered equine internal medicine specialist, boarded with the European College of Equine Internal Medicine.
