This is Shadi.
Shadi has been practicing a chin target with his mum, but because he's a saluki with long gangly legs and a big long nose, he's a bit too tall to do it on the sofa.
So he improvised πŸ˜‚

Old, not obsolete.

Vanilla is the absolute poster child of "old". Completely deaf, significantly blind, one ear broken from an old heamatoma treatment, and absolutely zero time for your nonsense.

But she is my little favourite, she still trains, and we still have fun together. I just make everything easier for her, so she can win just as easily as she used to.

And bonus points for her still being cute as a button 😍

Narrow path? No problem πŸ˜‰

We all face a narrow path at some point on our walks. And passing other people, dogs, bikes, scooters, etc, can be a bit of a squeeze. With reactive dogs, we are just asking for drama, and there are also many people who just simply do not want dogs anywhere near them (which is absolutely fine).
So why not just make everyone's life easier and pull in to the side?

Practice when nothing is going on, so you are ready for the times that there is.

Just your friendly Monday morning reminder that we don't need to yell at our dogs to have control.

Your dog not hearing you is very rarely the issue. It's clarity and consistency in your communication and training.
And practicing every day, so that you asking for things is normal, not a sudden restriction of fun 😊

Time for another ✨Top Tip✨
This one is "The Rule of 3".
What it is, and why it matters.

Just another room search to keep that brain and body working, while avoiding the hot weather 🀩

Aya has now decided to go multilevel πŸ˜‚ and jump all over the sofa to get a clearer impression of where the scent is when searching the room (fine by me - smart dog).
Bad mummy also makes a point of blasting the AC when we are doing this, which blows the scent away from its source, making the task even more tricky. Although clearly this is not enough to slow this little superpup down 😝

We've had boy brain and girl math...now I present you, DOG LOGIC πŸ˜‚

Whenever she is invited through an open door, if there is a doggy door available (no matter how far away or how inconvenient), Aya will always choose that instead.

It doesn't have to make sense to us, it makes sense to her.

We are working on a new scent 🀩

Aya is now imprinting on Kong, so we are back to basics again as we build a strong foundation.
Fun times ahead with the Scent Club!

Kenzo has been absolutely smashing his scentwork so far through the online academy and will be joining the Scent Club soon, but this video isn't about that.

Keep watching and see if you can spot the really interesting behaviour he does...

When he finds the scent, he turns his entire body to indicate on it from another direction. The indication is correct, that was indeed the scent. But the interesting question is - why did he turn?

This is known as a superstitious behaviour. Basically it is something he has patterned in to the skill, that isn't actually part of it, he just thinks it is. (It's Dog Logic πŸ˜‰).
Obviously, we don't want this, so we will shape it out, it's not a huge issue. But isn't it so fabulously weird to see in real time how animal brains work? 😍 And just how easy it can be for us to make a mistake in our training. Our dogs are so perceptive, and can pick up on 100 little things that we fail to notice at all.

Drop a comment if you can think of a possible reason that Kenzo might have learned this way.
HINT: It's most likely handler error (mine lol)

How do you communicate with your deaf dog?

Vanilla wasn't born deaf, but at 683 years old, her hearing has faded away over time. Her eyesight is on the way too, but we still have enough to work with for now.

We have adapted over time, and now use very clear and simple hand signals, as well as touch, in order to talk. I don't need to say much to her, she is long since retired from needing to do anything other than the grand total of whatever she wants. But asking for easy, slow, basic skills keeps her fresh.

There is something beautifully peaceful about training and engaging with deaf dogs. My favourite walks are my silent ones with her.
